Unit 1003 Building methods and construction technology © Pearson Education 2010 Printing and photocopying permitted Datum points ●Datum points are used to transfer levels on construction jobs. ●Site datums give a reference point on site for all levels. The site datum will be set in relation to an Ordnance Survey Bench Mark (OSBM).

Unit 1003 Building methods and construction technology © Pearson Education 2010 Printing and photocopying permitted Substructures ●The substructure receives the load from the building and transfers it to the ground. The main part of the substructure is the foundation. ●The entire area must be surveyed to select the correct type of foundation. ●The wrong type could lead to the building collapsing.

Unit 1003 Building methods and construction technology © Pearson Education 2010 Printing and photocopying permitted Types of foundation What are these foundation types?

Unit 1003 Building methods and construction technology © Pearson Education 2010 Printing and photocopying permitted Damp proof course ●Damp proof course is used to prevent damp from getting into a building. ●Slate can be used as DPC. ●Damp proof membrane is used as a waterproof barrier over larger areas, like floors.

Unit 1003 Building methods and construction technology © Pearson Education 2010 Printing and photocopying permitted Floors ●Suspended timber floor – timber joists span the floor. It is decked by wooden material. Air bricks are fitted beneath to prevent timber rot. ●Solid concrete floor – very durable, with its depth set by the Building Regulations. ●Floating floor – timber construction on a concrete floor with decking on timbers. ●When might these floor types be used?
