Scientific Method Ch 1.3 Scientific Method-process used to determine the solution to a problem ProblemObserveHypothesize -Identify -Seek Patterns -Predict Answer ExperimentDataConclude -Test Hypothesis -Record Changes -Suggest Answer Analyze Theory-happens when hypothesis, experiment, and conclusion repeated over and over again and same answer is found repeatedly. Can be modified or changed over time. Ex/Evolution Law-rule of nature. Not a theory. Always observed to be true unlike theories. Cannot be modified or changed over time since it’s an observable fact. Ex/Newtons 1 st Law

Constant-conditions that do not change during the lab. Always kept the same. Control Group-group that is not changed. Used to compare the experimental group to. Experimental Group-group that is altered. Independent Variable-variable that you change Dependent Variable-variable that changes as a result of the independent variable.

Ex/ Suzy, a Biologist for Miracle Grow Incorporated want to determine what concentration is ideal for a typical tomato plant. She Plants a tray full of tomato seeds into 4 rows, 6 plants for each row for a total of 24 plants. All of the plants have the same light, watering time, amount of water, gas exposure from atmospheric air, humidity, soil properties, and same species of tomato plants. She keeps the first row as the control group being careful not to add any fertilizer to this group. The second row is exposed to 0.5g fertilizer/week. The third row is exposed to 1.0g fertilizer/week. The fourth row is exposed to 1.5g fertilizer/week. Identify the: constants, control groups, experimental groups, independent variables, dependent variables Ex/Students ID in paragraph above

Graph the following data. Identify indep variable and dep variable. Label axis and title the graph. Draw line of best fit. Calculate the slope of the graph. What are the units for slope for this graph? Fertilizer Height 0g 1.0cm.5g 2.7cm 1.0g 4.6cm 1.5g 6.5cm 2.0g 8.4cm 2.5g 9.8cm Graphing Use 1,2,5 rule x=indep y=dep ex/time best fit line not need go through origin
