Summary: Chapter 3 David’s compass falls into the sea and he is shattered. He decides to navigate by using the position of the sun. David helps an English tourist to find his spectacles and they give him a sandwich. The English woman had asked him to smile, but he had to admit he couldn’t.

He found a broken piece of mirror which he wanted to use to see if he could learn how to smile. David came to the conclusion that all he wanted in life was freedom and a country where he could live safely. He came across an American couple whose car had run out of petrol. He offered to fetch some, but the woman seemed to think he’d steal the money.

David left his bundle in their possession to show that HE trusted THEM. He returned with the petrol, but refused to take any money from them. When he opened his bundle, he discovered an apology note from the American and a big sum of money. He asked God for courage to help him beg a lift from a lorry.

David got a lift from a man called Angelo. David thought him stupid because he could not make up his mind about which girl to choose.
