A number of strategic meetings attended by SCADM CO representing SCADM/SCAR. SCAGI actively progressing issues to do with: – SCAR Composite Gazetteer, – Added many datasets to ADD – UK working on change detection maps that they will also add to ADD. Significant increase in datasets attached to AMD metadata (up from 46 % to 53%). Not many SERFS in AMD yet (even from IPY activities). AMD CSW interface could be available to SCAR but only if we did not draw on technical resources of the GCMD. Kim will pursue further with Mike Sparrow and Stephanie. – Question: should we have a rep on GCMD EOS User Group to feed our requirements directly into this forum ? Or should we prepare written input when meetings are scheduled.

Updates from CO on PIC components and how development of the PIC aligns with our own strategic plan. Collectively reviewed tasks in the Implementation Plan. Had a demo of how you can badge metadata with PIC badge. – Question: did everyone understand that you can use either one of two badges and that one puts data in the public domain (i.e. Gives away copyright) and the other implies you keep your “copyright” but requests that people cite the source of the data ? – Question: How many people think that they will badge data as belonging to the PIC ? – Question: Can the GCMD badge existing data for people automatically ?

Update from Taco on meeting held in Oslo regarding ISO Metadata Profile. – Note: The ISO standard is designed so that communities of practise will establish their own “profile”. A profile is not a different or new standard, but a tailored version of the standard to suit a community’s needs. It is fully expected that there will be a range of ISO “profiles” but ALL will still meet the ISO standard. – Question: The GCMD is having to map to ISO (for various reasons). Should we start with this DIF mapping and see what in our collective opinion is missing, rather than start making a profile from scratch ? Pierre (SA) – representing the WDS alerted us to the fact that we could express interest in becoming part of the WDS (by completing an expression of interest). Even if we do that, however, there is no formal obligation to continue – its is just an expression of interest at this stage. Commenced discussions surrounding participation in the DIMS Implementation facilitated by Stein. There are many ways to participate: – Personal commitment, or – Co-opting others in your institution or nation (who may already be involved in similar activities) to participate,

– Funding some-one with expertise from another country to come to your Data Centre/institution to help you set something up. Stein reminded us that we are national representatives and that we are not expected to always take action ourselves but we should know who in our countries are doing work that might be able to assist, or who would might benefit from participating. Outcomes so far from our break-out group discussions: – NZ – will badge data (Task 3.1) – UK (Paul) – will join ISO Metadata Working Group (Task 1.1) – China – will join working group for Task 1.3 (but focussing on data services) – Japan – will join working group for Task 1.3 (but focussing on data services) – Korea – can we add you to task 1.3 ? – Norway – has signed up to Task 1.3 – Netherlands – has signed up to Task 1.1 (ISO Metadata)

Note: Joining a working group does not obligate, or commit you to deliver something. It indicates you are sufficiently interested to explore the matter further. It is through participating in discussions of the working group that we will be able to understand the full implications of what we are trying to achieve. We need your help to work out what is possible. Hopefully as discussions progress you will see if what the group wants to achieve aligns with what your country can deliver. You can help shape the extent of any planned commitment by the group by participating in discussions.
