2 Why do we respond to consultations? Responding to consultations allows the IFoA to engage with our key stakeholders on matters that are relevant to actuarial science and to speak up on relevant issues of public interest, raising awareness of the work of actuaries and the value we add to society. Why do we need member input? As a membership organisation it is important that our external communications are reflective of the whole membership, who have a variety of experience and expertise. We respond to consultations that are relevant to our members daily working life and so the member intellectual capital is vital for considering the reality and practicality of many of the themes covered in consultations. What you would gain from contributing to consultation response? Help shape the future of actuarial science Further your personal development Achieve recognition of having expertise in your chosen area, or of having made a significant contribution to its development Meet new people who have a common interest Contribute to your CPD activity

3 Task Specification With appropriate support from the IFoA policy team, volunteers are expected to: provide the intellectual capital of an IFoA consultation response; and lead drafting. This is usually coordinated via conference calls and email. Where the volunteers feel a face-to-face meeting would be more appropriate this can also be arranged. For each response we would anticipate approximately 6 hours of time from each volunteer. Approximately 1 to 2 hours of this would be on conference calls, 2 to 3 hours of drafting and 1 to 2 hours of reviewing (this varies dependent on how the group choose to divide the workload). Most response times are between 4 and 12 weeks. What to expect from your first meeting Where there is not already a Chair, a Chair for the group will be allocated. The policy team will inform the group of any previous IFoA work of which the group should be aware when deciding their messaging. The policy team will work with the group to agree appropriate deadlines for the various stages of the consultation process. The group will discuss ideas regarding the content of the consultation and the key points which should feature in the response, in preparation volunteers should have familiarised themselves with the consultation document. The workload (i.e. who will draft/ review which sections of the response) will be split amongst the members of the group.

4 Volunteer Person Specification Have relevant experience and expertise to provide intellectual capital to the content of the response. Understand how the outcome from the consultation might affect the work of actuaries. Understand how the consultation affects wider policy and the public interest. Ability to draft clear written communications and/or to provide peer review. Ability to work within a team. Ability to consider and represent IFoA views. Chair, Volunteer Person Specification To lead meetings, ensuring that actions and responsibilities are clear and appropriately distributed. Have the relevant expertise to ensure the response is comprehensive and balanced. Ability to lead virtual teams. Ability to lead groups of peers. Ability to facilitate differences of opinion and find common ground. Confident verbal and written communicator. Ability to consider and represent IFoA views.

5 Consultation Response Process The IFoA’s previous consultation responses can be found on our website.website http://www.actuaries.org.uk/research-and-resources/pages/consultation-responses IFoA monitor for and communicate to the volunteers any outcomes. Consultation submitted. The response is sent to the Public Affairs Consultation Committee for sign-off of tone and messaging. The response is sent to the relevant Boards for quality assurance and technical sign-off. Volunteers draft the response and the IFoA Policy Team manage the process. If we do not already have a relevant group an ad hoc group of volunteers is sought in partnership between the Board and the IFoA Policy Team. Consultation identified by the IFoA policy team and prepare a brief to support the relevant volunteer group.
