2nd PROJECT WORKSHOP April 25-26, 2013 Belgrade, Serbia Compilation of Available Strong Motion Data for Albania NATO SCIENCE FOR PEACE PROJECT NO “Improvements in the Harmonized Seismic Hazard Maps for the Western Balkan Countries ” Llambro Duni Institute of Geosciences, Energy, Water and Environment Polytechnic University of Tirana Institute of Geosciences, Energy, Water and Environment, IGEWE, Albania

The strong motion network has been established for the first time on During a two years period, thirteen seismological stations of the Albanian seismological network were equipped with SMA-1 analog accelerographs. This network recorded the Tirana earthquake of January 9, 1988 (M L = 5.7) with acceleration as high as cm/s/s on E-W component on sandstones of the Tirana seismological station. Table 1. Institute of Geosciences, Energy, Water and Environment, IGEWE, Albania ALBANIAN STRONG MOTION NETWORK (ASMN) After some years of inactivity, the network became operational at the beginning of June 2002 with the upgrading of 16 analog SMA-1 accelerographs installed on the permanent stations of the Albanian seismological network (ASN) and some other buildings. Institute of Geosciences, Energy, Water and Environment, IGEWE, Albania Unified BSHAP Earthquake Catalogue ALBANIAN STRONG MOTION NETWORK (ASMN) Seismic Zonation Map of Albania (Sulstarova et al., 1980) The stations in Tirana are selected according to the microzonation map (Koçiu et al., 1988).

Institute of Geosciences, Energy, Water and Environment, IGEWE, Albania The buildings of the seismological stations are quite similar to each other, typically small buildings that fulfill most of the basic requirements: -Small soil-structure interaction due to the small dimension of the structure, -Similar soil-structure interaction due to uniform construction style, -Separated from other buildings -Sufficient space for installation -Reliable power supply ALBANIAN STRONG MOTION NETWORK (ASMN)

Institute of Geosciences, Energy, Water and Environment, IGEWE, Albania Actually, ASMN has new digital instruments 10 Guralp CMG-5TD systems (provided in the framework of NATO SfP project) are installed in several points in Tirana (see the BSHAP Inventory) 8 Guralp CMG-5T sensors (provided in the framework of NATO SfP project) are actually installed on the 8 seismological stations of our network. Three of them, PHP, KBN and TPN are actually transmiting in real time via satellite communication (Intelsat). The VSAT technology is used for this purpose. Institute of Geosciences, Energy, Water and Environment, IGEWE, Albania ALBANIAN STRONG MOTION NETWORK (ASMN) A project with a Mobile Communication Company is launched for establishing of a Virtual Private Network (APN). This project aims not only providing real time data from the CMG-5TD accelerographs in the data center in the Institute, but also their remote control and configuration.

Institute of Geosciences, Energy, Water and Environment, IGEWE, Albania ALBANIAN STRONG MOTION NETWORK (ASMN) The SMA software of Kinemetrics was used for data processing. Consequently, the CDMG format V1 (uncorrected), V2 (corrected) and V3 (spectra) files were released.

Institute of Geosciences, Energy, Water and Environment, IGEWE, Albania ALBANIAN STRONG MOTION NETWORK (ASMN) The main achievements during this six-month period 1. The inventory of the Albanian Strong Motion Network (ASMN) is done. This network is actually composed by twelve SMA accelerographs upgraded by the QDR digital kits, ten CMG-5TD standalone systems, and eight CMG-5T sensors. 2. Continuous real-time data transmission via satellite communication (Intelsat) to the our monitoring center in Tirana, is provided in this period for three CMG-5T strong motion sensors collocated in our existing seismic stations, namely the Peshkopia (PHP), Korça (KBN) and Tepelena (TPN).

Institute of Geosciences, Energy, Water and Environment, IGEWE, Albania ALBANIAN STRONG MOTION NETWORK (ASMN) The main achievements during this six-month period 3. During this period a project aiming implementation of the GPRS technology for ten Guralp CMG-5TD standalone accelerographic systems has been also undertaken. The intention is to establish their remote control and continuous real-time data transmission. The project is under way. Several tests have been done and the results are very promising. 4. Efforts are undertaken by our specialists to start the determination of the ground type V S30 parameter for our BB and SM stations using geophysical methods.

Institute of Geosciences, Energy, Water and Environment, IGEWE, Albania ALBANIAN STRONG MOTION NETWORK (ASMN) Future actions 1.Put in operation the GPRS technology for the remote control and continuous real-time data transmission of the CMG-5TD systems. 2. Using the BSHAP2 funds for Albania, we intent to buy two additional Nanometrics Trident digitizers, in order to install two of the five remained CMG-5T sensors in two other VSAT stations, sharing our existing seismographic satellite technology (Nanometrics – Canada) used in these seismic stations. This solution will further improve the real time strong-motion data collection and dissemination, making them available also for the other partners in the BSHAP2 project, and beyond.

Thank You !
