Who we are?  A Chinese domestic NGO  Mission C ollect, extend and advance ecological alternative forms of pest control, to eliminate the chemical pesticide pollution, to promote ecological agriculture and organic agriculture, so as to protect the health of human beings and the environment, as well as to promote the social and economic sustainable development.

We Believe  Pesticide is not the only or best choice to control pests  Awareness can drive behavior  Rural community, school, NGOs could be the main bodies to reduce/eliminate pesticide pollution.  Pesticide reduction need support and active involvement of laws and regulations.

 Programme - Pesticide & Health (High hazard pesticides) - Integrated Alternatives Approaches - Ecological Agriculture (rice, education, livelihood) - Climate change & agriculture - GE crops & food - Promotion What are we doing?

 Working region Based in Kunming city of Yunnan province, and set vision to the whole China. Yunnan, Guizhou, Shannxi, Guangzhou, Xinjiang, Beijing, Sichuan, etc.

Organization Structure Governing BodySteering Council PME Executive management group Administrative Finance Programme Projects

Capacity building to promote rural community to involve in pesticide reduction-A case of Chengguan village, Dali, Yunnan Background: vegetable and rice; water resource region of Erhai lake (2nd. Biggest fresh lake in Yunnan); farming depend on pesticide Aim: reduce pesticide usage; eliminate high toxic pesticide/illegal pesticide; sustainable pesticide reduction work

Results  Stop use of highly toxic pesticides like Methamidophos, and reduce insecticide at least 50%.  The use of organic fertilizers reached above 80% of the used fertilizers.  The leading farmers formed their own farmer training school authorized by local government, and organized farmers to carry out ecological farming practice, including use of traditional farming knowledge and methods like intercropping, rotating cropping, backlight trap for crop pests etc., and further reduce their reliance on agro-chemicals.  Leading farmers learnt how to write proposal for their community development and finally they successfully fundraised for their training and ecological agriculture development.

Outreach  In the past three years crop pests did not lead to significant economic loss, For example, rice production ranges between KG/mu (1mu≈666m 2 ) and per capita incomes increase by about RMB300 each year in the past two years.  Selected by government to be Ecological Model Village in Dali, so as to sharing their experience to more villages.

Promotion  NGO/CSO Contain: organizational capacity building; facilitating to carry out related work; information support, etc. Results: Some of them has already taken the concrete action in pesticide action, for example:  The rural/urban prorgamme group of social work center of Yunnan University incorporated pesticide reduction and ecological rice farming into their project activities and invited PEAC staff to work together;  Center of Biodiversity and Indigenous Knowledge community project team used weed machine in place of Paraquat and advanced the organic tea in the south of Yunnan.  Southwest Office of Heifer International China Programme Helped farmers with ecological vegetable farming around Kunming  Some groups in GuiZhou,Shannxi,Henan and Beijing began action.

 Education Aspects Contain: Teachers’ capacity building; community agro-biodiversity value and sustainable use; agro- chemicals harms; agro-environmental improvement, Results:  Incorporated into educational plan and curriculum of 2 rural Primary School, and some universities.  Additionally, 3 Ph D graduates and 5 Master students has completed their dissertation research on the ecological alternatives and pesticide risk assessment at PEAC in the past 5 years. Most of them continue such kind of work at their host institutions and universities

 Cooperation with government Facilitating governmental sectors on advancing community based alternative pest management system and how to expand the ban of Methamidophos in the rural areas and how to ban/restrict Paraquat in China

Thank you!
