Refugee Population & Emigration Iran hosts one of the largest refugee populations in the world, with more than one million refugees, mostly from Afghanistan and Iraq. Despite this, the net emigration rate as of 2009 was migrant(s)/1,000 population. Essentially, more people are leaving the state than are coming into it. According to estimates, between two and three million Iranian citizens have emigrated to other countries, mostly since the Iranian Revolution in 1979.
