INVENTORIES OF CH 4, N 2 O and NH 3 FROM UK AGRICULTURE Tom Misselbrook, Lorna Brown IGER, North Wyke

GHG Inventory Construction CH 4 Predominantly Tier 1 methodology Tier 2 methodology for cattle and lambs Dairy cattle EF vary from year to year (liveweight and milk yield multipliers) Other cattle have constant EF EF for lambs assumed at 40% that for adult sheep. Lambs assumed to live for 6 months.

GHG Inventory Construction N 2 O - Animal Waste Management Systems UK-specific N excretion values used for livestock categories 20% of total N excreted assumed to volatilise as NH 3 or NO x and therefore deducted prior to N 2 O loss calculations Distribution of manure into different AWMS based on UK survey data IPCC default EFs used for each AWMS category N 2 O - Agricultural soils Follows IPCC methodology

NH 3 Inventory Construction Detailed methodology Not N flow model Largely empirical emission factors - derived from UK research Not good for scenario testing

NH 3 Inventory Construction Excel based 1 worksheet for Version log 1 worksheet for all input data calculation worksheets for different sectors (cattle, pigs, sheep, etc.,) Summary results sheets by sector by AWMS

New Model - NARSES N flow model model core engine with user interface Spatial resolution (10km grid) and monthly timesteps Include abatement measures for scenario testing

Activity data (for all inventories) Agricultural Census data (annual survey) Fertiliser use (annual survey) Management practice data (survey/expert opinion)

Welcome to the June Agricultural Census The data published on these pages is produced and maintained by the Farming Statistics Team at Defra, Foss House, York. If you have any questions about the census or have any comments on these web pages please contact the team on the following link or on telephone Latest June ResultsLatest June Results Add to favouritesAdd to favourites 47 categories (livestock & crops) RSD and 95% confidence intervals Good spatial resolution if required

Other Issues GHG - Should we use more UK-specific EFs from ongoing research. In particular, fraction of deposited NH 3 which is leached (0.3 IPCC) appears too high. NH 3 - How frequently should we revise EFs with new research data? All - move towards modelling EFs from management and environmental data. Could combine data from different countries. Emission Factors

Other Issues Other sources Hard standings used by livestock - significant for NH 3 Linking GHG and NH 3 inventories More powerful scenario testing

Documentation Details of annual changes Derivation of emission factors detailed Sources of all input data given
