The Librarian Professional Development Committee (LPDC): NCC 2007 Open Meeting Tsai Auditorium of Harvard Center for Government and International Studies on Friday, March 23, 2007, 9:00 to 12:00 p.m.

The Librarian Professional Development Committee (LPDC) Established in late March With the goal of serving the role of coordinating continuing education and professional development activities for Japanese and East Asian studies librarians who serve faculty, students, and other users in the Japan field.

Charges to the LPDC 1 Serve as a point of communication on professional development needs for the NCC 2 Serve as a screening committee for US applications to the Japanese Studies Information Specialists Training (JSIST) Program funded by the Japan Foundation 3 Solicit views on the collective needs for professional development of Japanese and East Asian studies librarians who serve faculty, students, and other users in the Japan field and make recommendations to NCC for developing future projects 4. Serve as a clearinghouse for professional development in Japanese studies librarianship and respond to individual consultation needs.

Tenri Antiquarian Materials Workshop for Overseas Japanese Studies Librarians (Tenri Workshop) Background Professor Hideo Yamanaka (Tenri Univ.) on sabbatical at Cambridge University Many antiquarian materials exist in Japanese studies collections outside Japan Quite often they materials not been processed Materials have not been accessible to researchers.

Professor H. Yamanaka’s Initiative UK Colleagues’ Supports US Participation Proposed during the EAJRS annual conference in Lund, Sweden 2005 For possible funding, Yamanaka, Tytler (Oxford), and Noguchi visited the Japan Foundation Tokyo Headquarter in Dec. 2005

Project Objective To establish a cohort of librarians expertly trained in the best practices for managing, cataloguing and organizing antiquarian manuscript and printed material, who will serve as core persons responsible for providing guidance and training on such material to colleagues in their respective countries/regions.

NCC’s Collaborations Support letter for the fund proposal submitted to the Japan Foundation by the UK Japan Library Group/Tenri Workshop Preparatory Committee Toshie Marra-san (NCC Chair then, CEAL CJM Subcommittee on Japan Rare Books)’s advice Fund Proposal to the NEAC Review of the documents: announcement and the application form for North America Call for application to eastlib, Etc.

Topics for Workshop Year 1: Basic knowledge for management and cataloguing of materials: focus on Edo Period printed material. The workshop will contain a combination of lectures and practical sessions on the following key areas: Outline and characteristics of Japanese manuscripts/early printed books Types of format/binding; basic bibliographic terminology Characteristics of publishing/book distribution in Edo Period Basic cataloguing: focus on Edo Period printed material

Year 2: Management and cataloguing of antiquarian material including manuscripts Types of printed and manuscript material Practicalities and problems of manuscript cataloguing Intermediate cataloguing Conservation and management

Year 3: Management and cataloguing of antiquarian material of various subjects/formats Printed and manuscript material in non-book format Management, handling and organization of documents Advanced cataloguing Preservation and imaging data
