3 BES Solar Workshop BESACBESBES Solar Report Workshop on Basic Research Needs for Effective Solar Energy Utilization Workshop Objectives: To identify basic research needs and opportunities in solar electric, fuels, thermal and related areas, with a focus on new, emerging and scientifically challenging areas that have the potential to have significant impact in science and technologies. Highlighted areas will include improved and new materials and processes to overcome short-term showstoppers and long-term grand challenges for the effective utilization of solar energy.

6 Workshop Date: April 18-20, 2005 Location: Bethesda North Marriott Hotel - Conference Center (new hotel next to Metro Red Line White Flint Station) Proposed Program: April 18 AMPlenary Session April 18 PM – April 20 AMBreakout Panel Discussions April 20 PMSummary Session April 21Report Writing by Core Group Plenary session will include overview presentations by representatives from DOE technology program, leading industries, and academic institutions. Breakout panel discussions will be grouped by sub-panel topics. Each sub-panel will have ~12 panelists consisting of leading experts from U.S. and foreign countries. Two observers from each DOE lab will be invited to attend the workshop. BES Solar Workshop Logistics

7 BES Solar Workshop Planning  BES will provide financial and administrative support to the workshop.  BES has solicited input from DOE-EERE Solar Technology Program on solar technology gaps as a basis to formulate workshop panel topics. EERE Staff will provide pre-workshop briefings to workshop panelists on critical solar electric and solar thermal research needs.  Prior to the workshop, a factual document will be prepared summarizing the current developments in each breakout session. It will serve as the factual part of the final workshop report, and it will also be used to educate participants prior to the workshop.  During the workshop, each panel is expected to generate 3-10 high priority research topics describing key research objectives that would enable revolutionary progress in the field.  Workshop report is expected to be published by August 2005. The workshop output will be used by BES for use in laying the foundations for new directions and funding support for solar energy utilization research.
