Table Of Contents 1.Jem’s Behavior 2.Jem Matures 3.Jem’s Mom 4.The Trial 5.Tom Shot 6.Dare 7.Atticus 8.Jem Realizes… 9.Boo Radley 10.Finding The Secret Hiding Place

Jem’s Behavior Jem changes during age 12. He is rude to Scout and his father Atticus. Scout explains how Jem starts behaving on pg “He told me so many times to stop pesturing him.” He changed in that he learns to respect other people and not be rude.

Jem Matures Jem starts to mature when Dill ran away. He tells his mom the he is okay. “Jem was standing in a corner of the room, looking like the traitor he was.” “Dill, I had to tell him, “ he said, “You can’t run 300 miles off without your mom knowin.” This is an example of how he took into consideration how Dill’s mother would feel. He learned to to put himself in someone else’s shoes.

Jem’s Mom Jem would sigh and then go off and play by himself for a while. Jem is not really that showing in his character. His reaction to the memory of his mother is muted. I think when he remembers her, it changes his behaviors because he gets more sentimental and shows a good part of him. Scout: How old was I when Mama died? Jem: Two. Scout: How old were you? Jem: Six. Scout: Old as I am now. Jem: Uh huh. Scout: Was Mama pretty? Jem: Uh, huh. Scout: Was Mama nice? Jem: Uh, huh. Scout: Did you love her? Jem: Yes. Scout: Did I love her? Jem: Yes. Scout: Do you miss her? Jem: Uh, huh.

The Trial On page 106 “I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody…I’m hard put, sometimes-baby it’s never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is bad name. It just shows you how poor that person is, it doesn’t hurt you. “ At first, Jem thinks everyone is treated equally and does not realize there is racism going on in his world. He then becomes aware of this bad situation. This affects him because he feels bad for Tom during the trial because his case is really unfair just because he is black.

Tom Shot Tom Robinson is shot 17 times while trying to escape prison. Jem then understands the idea of innocense when Tom died. All he tried to do was help someone in need, no matter what the skin color was. He didn’t hurt anyone, and he ended up shot. Just like hunters would kill mockingbirds for sport, people kill innocense, or other people who are innocent. Jems ideas towards justice and innocense improve to a more complex understanding. ( & more mature)

Dare Jem, Scout and Dill went to Boo Radley’s. “…Jem had never declined a dare. “ His definition of bravery changes as he grew up. He gets to experience the world around him. For example, in the beginning of the story, Jem only thought of bravery as touching the side of the Radley house. And then he learns that bravery is much more than that.

Atticus “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” pg. 90 Jem’s father teaches his Jem to tolerate those from other races and do what is right regardless of ones color. Anyone can be innocent regardless of their color. Ones color does not judge whether they are guilty. No innocent person should be killed.

Jem Realizes… He realizes why Atticus made him read to Mrs. Dubose after she died. He found out she had a problem and was an addict. He then understood why she acted the way she did. He changes in that he then learns you can’t judge how other people act without knowing what they’ve gone or are going through. He learned everyone deserves the same amount of respect. “ People are entitled to full respect for their opinions but shes old and ill. You can’t hold her responsible for what she says and does. “

Boo Radley In the beginning, Jem believes everything he hears about Boo. As the story progresses he learns that Boo Radley is acually a great and nice man. “Boo was about six and a half ft tall, judging from his track, he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch that’s why his hands were bloodstained. “ This is a perfect example of how crazy Jem thought Boo Radley was.

Finding the Secret Hiding Place While Jem and Scout are going home, they found a tree. “Don’t take it, Jem, I said “this is somebody’s hidin’ place. “ This shows Jem’s childish brain progressing to thinking like a mature young adult.
