According to Webster’s Dictionary 1: a political philosophy, movement, or regime that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition 2: a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control

Characteristics of a fascist gov’t… Nationalism is celebrated (extremely) Country controlled by 1 political party (& led by dictator) Citizen rights are limited (freedom of speech, press, etc.) Military and male strength are glorified Usually a call to action against some threat (real or imaginary)

Authoritarian Governments Government controlled by either a single powerful ruler, or powerful elite. People have no say in running government Often repress political opposition Usually allow some personal freedom Don’t attempt to control all aspects of people’s lives

Totalitarian Governments A government that aims to control the political, economic, social, intellectual, and cultural lives of its citizens. An extreme form of authoritarianism Often use propaganda, secret police, and terror to enforce policies. Usually run by a single, all-powerful dictator.
