Scope of ECIC n Established March 2001 n Promote the collection and reporting of standardized external cause of injury codes –These codes are important for injury surveillance, prevention and control; cost containment, and public health research n Promote the use of external cause of injury codes by public health practitioners and researchers (Develop educational strategy)

Progress to Date n Through collaboration with NUBC, a Data Maintenance (DM) request was approved by X-12 to include ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS as sources n Cooperation with AHRQ, NAHDO and CSTE on gathering information on the current state of external cause of injury reporting and use n Gathering of compelling stories using external cause of injury codes to impact policy, health outcomes, etc.

Future Focus n Develop an effective ECIC educational strategy using information gathered over the past year to promote awareness of the importance of standardized collection of external cause of injury data
