FriendsCamp Chemnitz, Germany 2004

Jon, Darci & Jamie were in Chemnitz for 6 weeks practicing conversational English with Readers. Matt was there for two weeks doing the same. Also included in this picture is Jennifer who has been there for 13 months with HIM (HeartSprings International Missions). Left to Right: Jon, Darci, Jamie, Matt and Jennifer.

The LST Workers hosted weekly parties behind the English school in Chemnitz. One of the reasons for the parties is to get the readers together with church members. Shannon and Mike were able to attend the last party which had a Mexican food theme.

Our first activity at camp was to play Pictionary in our small groups. This was to foster the idea of teamwork and be fun.

We sang a lot of songs with the readers. They preferred to sing American songs, as they view the German songs as old fashioned.

We studied the bible in our small groups. Each group consisted of at least Two FriendsCamp members and an LST Worker. This is Willie & Stephanie Hunter’s small group.

In addition to the Americans, each group had church members in it also. This is Paul Lufkin and Kim White’s group

We would read a passage from an easy to read version of one of the gospels, have the readers take turns re-reading the passage and then discuss. This is Mike & Shannon Plog’s small group

During the small group time the kids all met together and did crafts. There are usually more children who attend FriendsCamp, however Jan was our only attendee not on the team, so Timmy, Kelli, Ryan and Brendan spent a lot of time with him. In fact, Ryan and Jan are now pen-pals.

We played Kickball in the field in front of the retreat house.

We also played volleyball.

We set up a huge scavenger hunt. The searchers had to find clues. The clues led to more clues...

After finding all of the clues, they opened the envelopes and found play money inside.

The money in the envelopes was then used to purchase items in an auction to build the tallest free standing structure...

The materials that were auctioned off were Newspaper, boxes straws, putty and tape. Each team had 30 minutes to complete their building.

If the Plog group wasn’t holding ours up it would fall over.

If the Hunter’s group didn’t keep a hand on theirs, it too would fall over.

Paul & Kim’s group built a structure that can withstand wind forces of up to 500 miles per hour. Maybe not that much, but it stands on it’s own.

Back in the States.

Although we have no idea how God will use this time we know that there were 11 people who came to a FriendsCamp for a weekend and made some connections with the local church members. We pray that God will use this time to reach people who are hungry for Him, and that He will be glorified through this. Thank you for your prayers and support.
