Konstruktion und Nähtechnik mittelalterlicher weltlicher Kleidung Construction and Sewing Techniques in medieval secular garments

The basics medieval worldly garments are rarely conserved there is no catalogue of the conserved garments almost nothing is known about the development of tailoring and garment construction

The venture Part I: A short introduction about materials, sources and textile techniques Part II: A comprehensive catalogue, encompassing existing secular medieval garments from 500 to 1500 and from most parts of Europe Part III: Archaeological experiments to gather knowledge about the construction techniques and tailoring procedures Part VI: Analysis and interpretation

The goal a survey of the secular garments still existing today a comprehensive catalogue for easier comparison of garments in the future retracing the lines of development in tailoring reconstructing the procedures of medieval tailors acquiring information about features and wearability of medieval garments

Medieval garments carefully chosen material, weave, sewing thread, sewing stitches and „patterns“ efficient and ergonomical cut of the garments simple, geometrical pattern pieces that result in very little wasted cloth

Reconstruction of tailoring collecting information about the garment sewing of the garment after the archaeological find, original pattern proportions wearing the finished garment to find out how it functions reconstruction of the measurements used for construction and pattern making of the original piece sewing of the garment using the reconstructed procedures

Problems many of the pieces are badly published or not published at all the large area of research means that a visit of the pieces is not always possible the garments are always published in the national language – up to now, books and articles in 14 languages are included in the thesis
