THE MEMORY SYSTEM LONG TERM MEMORY

A place here knowledge, skills, and life experiences are stored. The challenge is to store information systematically. Filing is the act of systematically entering data.

INFORMATION CAN BE STORED AS PAIRS Pairings can be improved by:  Saying them out loud.  Writing them down.  Creating an interesting diagram.  Practicing pairing with another person.

INFORMATION CAN BE STORED AS PROCEDURES This process can be improved by:  Talking through the steps of the procedure.  Making a tape recording, explaining how the procedure works to others.  Constant exposure to the process.

INFORMATION CAN BE STORED IN CATEGORIES Make diagrams showing relationships with a category. Use color to relate common ideas. Create color-keyed mind maps.

INFORMATION CAN BE STORED AS RULES AND FAMILIAR PATTERNS Maintain a rulebook Set up rules in two columns, one labeled “IF”, and the other labeled “THEN”.
