Academy of Pacesetting Districts Developing a District Operations Manual For a District System of Support

Introduction to the District Operations Manual What? Why? Who? When? How?

What is the District Operations Manual?  It articulates The District System of Support and provides a tool for keeping the District System of Support on track

 A coordinated effort to assist schools in improvement based on a clear vision and a coherent theory of action that constitutes a unified whole.  Not a series of solos, but a choir. 4 What is the District System of Support?

Why Develop an Operations Manual?  It takes what may be in everyone’s heads and puts it on paper  It provides a road map for the district to assist schools 5

Who Develops the Manual?  The District Academy Team - YOU in other words!!  With the help of your mentor 6

When Do We Develop the Manual?  You will start today!  Continue in your monthly full day work sessions.  Complete by September to share with the other teams 7

How Do We Develop the Manual? In the District Field Guide there is:  A writing guide for topics to be considered.  A template to help with development.  A narrative explaining each section with guiding questions and indicators to consider.

Tools to Help Develop the Manual Narrative Directions, descriptions, and hints to help you in completing the section. Guiding Questions Questions to consider with your District System of Support Team when completing the section. Indicators to Consider A list of Indicators to consider when completing the section. 9

Developing the Manual Provides Time to Think……..  What is our purpose, mission and vision for providing support to schools?  How do we organize a system, what structure will work best?  What support shall the district provide to build capacity of all schools?  What targeted supports shall the district provide to build the capacity of individual schools? 10

Time to Think………..  What “Menu of Services” can the district provide schools?  How will these services be delivered to schools?  What if the improvement efforts of the school and the district are not successful?  How do we monitor the performance of our system of support? 11

Before You Think About Your Current System of Support… We’ll consider two major elements:  Characteristics of an effective school  Two sets of Indicators  Indicators of Rapid Turnaround  Indicators of Teaching and Learning
