Choose at least one of the acts to write on the paper strip that will be provided for you. Please see your teacher if you need more strips. Teachers, please send class strips to Dr. Willis no later than Feb. 13th. Dr. Willis will create a kindness chain from the class strips. The class with the longest chain will be recognized at the end of the month.

Week 1 Caring

Caring This week, whether alone, in a group, or with the whole class, read through the Character Education Studies Weekly Reader. When all students have had time to read, as a class, have a discussion with your teacher.

Discussion Question #1 Why do you think Mother Teresa wanted to spend her time with people in slums?

Discussion Question #2 Why do you think Harriet Tubman went to so much effort to rescue people she didn’t even know?

How could you show that you care for one of your friends in class? Discussion Question #3 How could you show that you care for one of your friends in class?

Discussion Question #4 Why did Mother Teresa ask that a grand party, planned just for her, be cancelled?

How does it make you feel when someone shows that they care about you? Discussion Question #5 How does it make you feel when someone shows that they care about you?

Week 2 Caring

Random Acts of Kindness Week at OCES February 10-14 Try to do at least three things each day during this week to show kindness toward someone else. Choose at least one of the acts to write on the paper strip that will be provided for you. If you would like to write down a few other acts, please see your teacher for more strips. To Other People in My Community To Animals and the Environment Set goals for yourself that involve caring and showing kindness. List one goal under each heading below. Think about how you can accomplish each goal. At Home At School To Other People in My Community To Animals and the Environment

Week 3 Caring

Here are some questions for you and your classmates to think about and discuss.

Do you think people are born with compassion (caring/kindness), or is it something people learn? How can parents teach their children compassion? What examples of compassion have you seen?

Do you think most people in the world are compassionate? Why or why not? Is our world today more or less compassionate than in the past? What famous people living today do you consider to be compassionate? What have they done to help others?

The opposite of compassion is cruelty The opposite of compassion is cruelty. Have you ever been cruel to someone else? Describe what happened. How did it make you feel?

Has anyone ever been cruel to you. Describe what happened Has anyone ever been cruel to you? Describe what happened? How did you feel?

What can kids do at school to show more compassion to their classmates?

What can people do to make our world a more compassionate place?

Week 4 Caring

Summing up Caring Something I learned about caring is . . . Did you reach the “caring” goals you set for yourself? Give examples of how you are moving toward them or have accomplished them. One area I still need to work on to improve the way I show compassion or caring is . . .

Just For Fun Create a “kindness” bulletin board. Ask each student to contribute artwork, a poem, or a story. Display these on your bulletin board for everyone to share. Take time to have each student discuss his or her contribution. Teachers, please email Dr. Willis if you choose to create a bulletin board.

Just For Fun Make original greeting cards for people in hospitals, nursing homes, or our U.S. soldiers. As a special treat, you might want to include original poems or short stories to give with the greeting cards. If you choose to make the greeting cards, please send all unsealed cards to Dr. Willis by Friday, February 28th.
