Skeletal System By: Lejla Suljevic

What Are Bones? Bones are what make you stand upright, sit, jump, run and do everything else. If you didn’t have bones, you would be a puddle of skin and guts on the floor.

Types of Bones There are four different types of bones: long, short, flat, and irregular bones. It's pretty self explanatory on how they get their names.

Inside of a Bone Bones are made out of salts, water, and tissues. Inside of a bone, there is this jelly-like substance called bone marrow. Bone marrow makes blood cells for the body. And without bone marrow, you'd be dead. Simple as that.

Main Jobs for Bones The adult skeleton is made up of 206 bones while baby skeleton has 300 bones. Those bones, over time, fuse together to make bigger and stronger bones. There are four main jobs for the skeleton: to protect your organs, to protect your body and give it it's shape, to make blood cells and store minerals, and provide a frame for your muscles which allows you to move.

The Skull The skull protects the brain from injury. It also gives shape to your head and face. Without the skull, your brain would fold in on itself.

The Spine The spine is made out of 26 vertebrae in the human body. It helps you sit up straight and stand up. Without it, you would be bent over because you wouldn't be able to hold yourself up. It also protects the spinal cord, which connects your brain to the rest of your body.

Rib Cage Your rib cage is made out of 24 ribs. The ribs purpose is to protect your heart and lungs. All of your ribs attach to your spine, but only the top seven pairs or 'true ribs, connect to your sternum or breast plate. The next three pairs below are 'false ribs'. They all attach to your lowest true rib instead of your sternum. The last two pairs of ribs are called 'floating ribs'. These attach to your spine only.

Arms The arm is made up of 3 bones: ulna, radius, and humerus bones. The humerus makes up the upper half of your arm and is attached to your clavicle. The lower part of your arm is made up of the radius and ulna.

Legs & Hips The hip bone helps us to stand up right and move our legs. Our legs let us move, as you might know. Fibia, tibia, patella, and the femur are the four bones that make up the leg. The femur bone is the biggest and strongest bone in our body. It is easily capable of lifting or supporting 30 times its own volume and weight. It is also stronger than concrete.

Hands and Feet There are 27 different bones in your hands. Some of the bones include carpels, metacarpals, and phalanges. In your feet, there are 26 bones. Some of those bones include tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges.
