Meeting Agenda What has been happening thus far? Website Community Service Transition to Mount Pleasant High School Trips, Events, Etc. Tutoring Program and Practice Skills Open Forum for Parents A few words from our Family Liaison

What have we been doing so far? This year is off to a great start! Many students have shown interest in Community Service Projects and are really trying to meet (and exceed) their required hours by participating in after school activities, community volunteering opportunities, etc. Talley will be offering some community service opportunities as well. Please keep checking the website and our new, weekly phone updates to learn more. This month Talley officially began helping potential IB students shadow. If your child (those in grade 6) are interested in becoming student ambassadors and have not yet filled out an interest paper, please tell them to come and see me as soon as possible.

The Website We are working very hard this year to update the website with all appropriate information for current IB Students as well as potential IB Students. Please check the website for important information regarding meetings, trips, etc. The website now has links to paperwork for those considering the transition to Mt. Pleasant High School. Copies of all paperwork, including the Community Service Verification Form can also be found as an attachment. In addition to our IB website, many teachers have websites used just for their classes. Please make sure to check these sites when your child is absent to learn about missing assignments.

Community Service Acceptable Community Service opportunities include, but are not limited to: Helping a member of the community Volunteering time at an organization Mentoring younger children Neighborhood clean-ups Volunteering at a local soup kitchen Our next Talley “community service” opportunity involves writing and illustrating a children’s book to be donated to a local elementary school. Your child can pick up a flyer with more information in the guidance office.

IBMYP Transition to Mount Pleasant There are two primary forms potential Mount Pleasant IB attendees must fill out during the course of their 8 th grade year. The forms should be returned to Talley (attn: Ms. Feder) who will forward the forms to Mount Pleasant. These forms can be found on our website. The Mount Pleasant Honor Code The Mount Pleasant Information Sheet For those interested, shadowing at Mount Pleasant is an excellent way to gain insight into the typical IB High School workday.

Mount Pleasant High School Statement of Intent

IBMYP Transition to Mount Pleasant Once these forms are filled out and returned, your part is complete. Mount Pleasant requires both the first and second mark period report cards in order to make their official decision. Once report cards are in, I will bring the paperwork and report cards to Mount. This is where the decisions about acceptance will occur.

Trips, Events, Etc. Our 8 th Grade Students went on the annual trip to Philadelphia before Winter Break. They were able to explore the city and learn about the historical significance of Philadelphia. A group of Mount Pleasant High School International Baccalaureate students ventured to Talley earlier this year to speak with our 8 th grade students about the high school IB program. This was more of a student- centered question-and-answer panel. Talley’s “Community Service” month began in December. Students were very, very generous and donated tons of food, paper goods, etc. to the Ronald McDonald House. We were able to stuff an entire bus with these collections and help many people in need. This spring, Talley will be presenting the drama performance “Peter Pan Jr.” We are currently in the middle of our basketball and cheerleading seasons.

Tutoring Program and Practice Skills Talley Middle School offers free tutoring to students on various days of the week. Currently, students involved in the tutoring program work with Compass Learning. Students have access to this website from any home, library, etc. computer as well. Students can use this website as a resource when studying for our upcoming DCAS test. Teachers also suggest certain online webpages for students during the various stages of studying.
