Salem Witch Trials

 Controversy brewed when the real Rev. Parris became the 1 st ordained minister of Salem Village in He was disliked by some because of his rigid ways and greed.  Puritan villagers believed all quarreling was the work of the Devil.  January 1692, Rev. Parris’ daughter Elizabeth, age 9, and niece Abigail Williams, age 11, began having hysterical fits. Another girl, Ann Putnam, age 11 experienced similar episodes. Followed by Mary Walcott, Mercy Lewis, Elizabeth Hubbard, Susannah Sheldon, Mary Warren, & Elizabeth Booth.  They screamed, threw things, spoke peculiar words and contorted their bodies into strange positions. The local doctor claimed it was supernatural!  February 29, under pressure from magistrates Jonathan Corwin & John Hathorne, the girls blamed 3 women for afflicting them: Tituba (slave), Sarah Good (homeless woman), & Sarah Osborne (poor woman).

Salem Witch Trials  Both Sarah’s claimed innocence, but Tituba confessed the Devil came to her after being beaten. All three went to jail on March 1 st.  Others jailed: Rebecca Nurse, Martha Corey, Dorothy Good, Rachel Clinton, John Proctor and his whole family.  Historians believe Thomas Putnam & Samuel Parris were the ones encouraging the girls to accuse specific people for revenge.  This planted the seed of paranoia and a stream of false accusations followed for the next few months that would end with many lives.  YouTube.com. Salem Witch Trials  1692 Nineteen Puritan men & women + 2 dogs = hung for witchcraft within a few months.  Bodies buried in shallow graves or not at all.  Community’s hysterical fear of the Devil lead to their deaths.  300 years later - the state acknowledges its responsibility & apologizes and damages paid to families of victims.  Witches were persecuted & discriminated then. Witch Trials vs. Crucible Play  Today people are discriminated against for their race, nationality or skin color. In the Crucible play…  In Salem village, young girls discovered in woods dancing & conjuring spirits with a slave named Tituba.  Dancing & the forest was associated with the Devil.  To deflect punishment, they begin accusing others of sorcery.  The Crucible contains a fictional account of how the Salem Witch Trials occurred.  Miller also used the names of people involved in the real witch trials as the names of some of his characters and changed their ages. Example, Abigail is 17 in his play, but in real life was really 11. Also Anne Putnam was a wife who lost all her kids in his play, but in real life was an 11 year old girl.
