How to Use the Internet Safely – Social Networks and Identity Privacy Purpose: – This week we’re going to spend a little time everyday talking about how to use computers and the Internet to become smarter and safer. Be ResponsibleBe SafeBe Respectful

Questions to think & discuss What are some things you like to do on the computer? – Find information – friends – Interact with others via online activities What are some positive things you find about the Internet? – Fun – Full of information, interesting people, and places. – Beneficial in our lives – Like the real world What are some negative things you find about the Internet? – Unsafe – Public information – No privacy Be RespectfulBe ResponsibleBe Safe

What is the Internet? What does or can it do? Easy access to websites Collects personal information – Online surveys – Enter contests – Online registration forms: address, age, and other items – Sensitive information: name, gender, age, home address, phone number, picture, credit card information or passwords. Stores personal information as public information – Marketers can use this information to their advantages (spam, junk , etc.) Be RespectfulBe ResponsibleBe Safe

Do you want strangers to know who you are, where you live, and every thing about your personal information? How do you protect yourself and family from publicizing your information online? What is Social Networking website? Facebook – Age 13+ – Ability to post a profile and communicate with others – Ability to post pictures – Sharing facts such as name, home address, school, etc. How much is “too much information”? What is considered “private” vs. “public”? What are some advantages or disadvantages? – Attract attention? CyberSavvy Practice Make safe and smart choices – Ask for permission from your parent or adult before providing any information online – Ask for parent permission before you join a social networking site – Ask your parents for advise that can help you make wise choices and avoid trouble. Don’t fill out online forms or surveys, enter contests, or join social networking sites without parent permission. Don’t share personal information online such as name, address, phone number, age, gender, photo or Social Security Number.
