What is the Internet? What does or can it do? Easy access to websites Collects personal information – Online surveys – Enter contests – Online registration forms: address, age, and other items – Sensitive information: name, gender, age, home address, phone number, picture, credit card information or passwords. Do you want strangers to know who you are, where you live, and every thing about your personal information? How do you protect yourself and family from publicizing your information online? What is Social Networking website? Facebook – Age 13+ – Ability to post a profile and communicate with others – Ability to post pictures – Sharing facts such as name, home address, school, etc. How much is “too much information”? What is considered “private” vs. “public”? What are some advantages or disadvantages? – Attract attention? CyberSavvy Practice Make safe and smart choices – Ask for permission from your parent or adult before providing any information online – Ask for parent permission before you join a social networking site – Ask your parents for advise that can help you make wise choices and avoid trouble. Don’t fill out online forms or surveys, enter contests, or join social networking sites without parent permission. Don’t share personal information online such as name, address, phone number, age, gender, photo or Social Security Number.
