Helping at Home Spring Term

Photo Story…

Spring 1 Topic: Who Can I Ask for Help? Who can I ask for help at home? Who can I ask for help at school? What do Superheroes do to help? How is Chinese New Year celebrated? When should I call 999? When I grow up I would like to be…

Phonics Overview Phase One Phase Two Phase Three Phase Four Phase Five Phase Six

Key Vocabulary… Segmenting: breaking up words into their individual sounds so that we can spell a word. Blending: putting individual sounds together so that we can read a word. Phoneme: the smallest unit of sound in a word. Grapheme: the letter or letters that represent the phoneme.

Digragh: Two letters that make one sound e.g. sh, th Trigraph: Three letters that make one sound e.g. Igh Split diagragh: Two letters that are split and make one sound e.g. a- e = late. Key Vocabulary…

In Phase 4, no new graphemes are introduced. The main aim of this phase is to consolidate the children's knowledge and to help them learn to read and spell words which have adjacent consonants, such as trap, string and milk. All the sounds must be heard within the word. Phase 4

Phase 4 Tricky Words said have like so do some come were there little one when out what

In phase 5 we introduce split diagraghs. They are a_e, e_e, i_e, o_e and u_e. The two letters work as a team but they arent directly next to each other. In Phase Five, children will learn more graphemes and phonemes. For example, they already know ‘ai’ as in rain, but now they will be introduced to ay as in day and a-e as in make. Alternative pronunciations for graphemes will also be introduced, e.g. ea in tea, head and break. Phase 5
