The TEAM Thing …trying to get weird people to function together … Presented by Steve Thomas February 11, 2015 [session one] RETHINK!

3 BIG questions… What is team?

1. What does team look like to you? 2. What do people mean when they say they want team? 3. Is your team stuck in group mode? But first…What do most people think about when they think of team?

Sports teams

Sort of Sports teams

Sports teams…sort of

Team of animals

Team of animals… even if the team is small!

Marriage is a team! HAPPY! not so happy!

Marriage is a team! REALLY HAPPY!

A cast can make a great team!

A band …no matter the year or genre… is a team!

Almost anything that functions together as one can be considered a team! So, here’s question one…

1. What does team look like to you? What would a sense of team look like to us/me? 5 words or less…

common vision common goal common purpose leadership unity together collective united cooperation family partnership and of course… Together Everyone Achieves More!

2. What do people mean when they say they want team? Lessons from Mannheim Steamroller

u-ni-ty arrangement of elements so that each contributes to the main theme…unchanging singleness of purpose or action…

The foundational effectiveness of teamwork

1. Every person must be convinced there is more to gain by working together than not!

SYNERGY

1. Every person must be convinced there is more to gain by working together than not! SYNERGY Undeniable Belief

What is the most important part of a bridge?

1. Every person must be convinced there is more to gain by working together than not! 2. Every person must pledge themselves to the sense and feeling of team! SPIRIT SYNERGY

STRENGTHS 1. Every person must be convinced there is more to gain by working together than not! 2. Every person must pledge themselves to the sense and feeling of team! 3. Every person must recognize that every person is vital to the cause! SPIRIT SYNERGY

STRENGTHS 1. Every person must be convinced there is more to gain by working together than not! 2. Every person must pledge themselves to the sense and feeling of team! 3. Every person must recognize that every person is vital to the cause! Unswerving Core Values SYNERGY SPIRIT

3. Is your team stuck in group mode? Do some serious evaluation soon!

Groups Think they’re placed together for administrative purposes only. Approach jobs as hired hands. Are told what to do and how to do it; ideas are not encouraged. Distrust each other’s motives. Disagreements are seen as personal attacks. May play games and set traps to harm another’s credibility. Real understanding isn’t valued. Conformity, not results, is the desired outcome. Work independently; turf wars are not uncommon.

Teams Coached to think as an interdependent unit. Feel ownership for their jobs and team. Asked to apply unique talents and strengths to the team. Work in a climate of trust and open communication. Conflicts are handled with care and professionalism; seen as an opportunity for new ideas. Each one takes responsibility for own attitudes and behavior. Understanding is valued and pursued. Commitment to the results is the desired outcome.

what now?

+ Have the team rank the top three issues you deal with on the list above. Then discuss how you might make those better. + Read 5 Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni. Have the team take the assessment in the back of the book. + Ask the team what they think of when they think of team. You will NOT come up with one definition [and that is not the point], but you and the team will see that everyone may have differing ideas. + Have the discussion with the team about what would build unmistakable comradery…that sense and feel of team. + Give the team the group vs. team list and decide which your team tends to lean towards. what now?
