Center for Teaching and Learning Vision: The center will foster and sustain faculty development in the pursuit of exemplary practices in teaching and learning. Mission: To promote transformative teaching through collaboration and reflection to ensure Sinclair’s diverse students have varied opportunities for developing their potential as members of the global community Structure: Director (full-time), administrative assistant (full-time), staff support (part-time) Resources: Institutes, peer observations/mid-term reviews, Café, Fall Conference, Student Engagement Track workshops

CTL Resources Peer Review/Observation: Used strictly for assessment purposes and to serve as a guide in reflecting about teaching and learning for adjunct faculty. (forms provided) Mid-term Reviews: Used to gather responses from students about their current instructor and course mid-way through a term. Both adjunct and full-time faculty are able to request mid-term reviews so that they can make substantive changes before the course ends, which will help increase student learning. (forms provided)

CLT Resources The Institutes: -Professional Development Workshops -Offered between terms (3x year currently) -Attended and presented by faculty, staff, and guest speakers -Workshops are designed to share best practices, offer technical/software training, provide semester conversion training, such as “The Profession of Being a College Teacher” and “Teaching to the Rhythm of Semesters”, etc.

CTL Resources Student Engagement Track Sessions: A series of six workshops, staring in October and finishing in May, used to develop faculty teaching and offered to both adjunct and full-time faculty. 1.Introduction to Student Engagement 2.Engaging the Whole Sinclair Student 3.Meeting Students Where They Are 4.Engagement through Active Learning 5.Breaking through and Breaking down Barriers 6.Engagement in Motion for YOUR Students

CTL Resources The Adjunct Certification Course: -Provides an overview of the responsibilities and expectations of adjunct faculty along with helping faculty recognize learning styles and incorporate effective presentation techniques and teaching strategies, including Service Learning. -One day training session (9-4:30) -Read and complete on-line material and quizzes -Schedule a peer observation -Visit a full-time faculty member’s class -Complete Peer Review Instructional Observation form and submit to the CTL (handouts on-line)

CTL Resources The Café: Mission: Enhance student learning by supporting faculty in their efforts to teach effectively Objectives: 1.Promote the development of teaching methods 2.Provide forums to involve Sinclair community members regarding effective teaching and learning 3.Support current initiatives and pedagogical approaches 4.Help Sinclair community members stay abreast of current pedagogy research and support work in the scholarship of teaching and learning
