Welcome back everyone! Here are a few points to get you focused on your study at Brockenhurst College: Student ID and lanyards – ALL students must wear their student ID and lanyards visible around their necks whenever on campus. These are required to buy food in the café and to purchase items from the Brock Shop. You will not be served anywhere without your lanyard around you neck. This year the work starts now. You will have final exams or coursework and you need to make sure you do well in these as there is no chance of resitting the year again, so attend and do your homework and ask for help if you need it, we want you to succeed as much as you want to succeed in the two years you are at Brock. Timetable changes will only be offered in certain circumstances and are not available if you are asking to be with a friend, or for part time work patterns, but if you have genuine reason for changes see one of the progress managers to see what we can do. Part time working hours should restricted to 12 – 15 maximum or they may have a negative effect on your attendance and results. Workshops will be available to learn how to revise and other aspects linked to the independent elements of college work. Watch out for these being advertised in future Student Bulletins.

Safety Office Student Health, Safety & Welfare Please comply with the following, which are intended to ensure your Health, Safety & Welfare whilst on College premises. On your arrival at Brockenhurst College you will be issued with a Student Identity Card/Lanyard. You are required to wear this at all times you are on site Your Tutors will advise you of the emergency procedures for the premises. If the fire alarm sounds please evacuate the premises immediately and follow all instructions given Do not enter any restricted areas that are clearly marked or touch the controls of any equipment or machinery unless authorised by your Tutor Please wear any personal protective clothing and/or equipment provided for your safety whilst in specific areas of Brockenhurst College Smoking (including electronic cigarettes) is strictly prohibited on the College site, except the designated smoking area Consumption of alcohol and use of illegal drugs is strictly prohibited in all areas of the College Health and Safety procedures and requirements are displayed in classrooms and in prominent positions around the College. Please note any specific safety requirements and act accordingly Drinking water is provided in key areas around the College site. Come and try Chinese at Brock! Do you know 1 in 5 people speak Mandarin Chinese – it is the world’s most popular and the fastest growing business Language in the world! Plus its amazing 5000 years’ history and culture! According to the CBI Mandarin is the second most in demand language for employers and 38% of employer who were looking for staff with a foreign language wanted employees who spoke Mandarin. A number of our students have gone on to study Oriental Studies at some of the top universities in the UK including Oxford and Cambridge. Numerous students who won apprenticeship due to the Chinese they learned. The fact that they have learned Mandarin and known about Chinese culture put them ahead of the crowd. GCSE Chinese is also counted into EBacc points if you are applying for Russell Group Universities. Brockenhurst College has been promoting Chinese Language and culture since 2004! Do you have a GCSE Modern Foreign Language? If not, have you considered coming along and finding out about the one year fast track GCSE Spanish course designed to meet the EBacc certificate requirements for Advanced Level students. This may be essential for some courses at some universities.

MUSIC AT BROCK Would you like to add INDIVIDUAL MUSIC LESSONS to your timetable at Brock? We have a team of instrumental teachers, and singing teachers, who are able to give individual half-hourly lessons each week as part of your timetable. Lessons are available for all students, regardless of previous experience. The cost of lessons is subsidised: a programme of thirty individual half-hourly lessons over the academic year (ten lessons each term) is offered at £360 for the year (or £ per term). We are able to offer lessons on a wide range of instruments, including: Bass Guitar, Cello, Clarinet, Cornet, Drums, Electric Guitar, Flute, Guitar, Horn, Piano, Saxophone, Singing, Trombone, Trumpet, Violin, Viola, Bassoon, Percussion. (Instruments are catered for on demand and we cannot guarantee to offer lessons until applications are received in September). Brockenhurst College Hockey Academy – Want to play hockey? It’s not too late to join us! If you have ever played Hockey before or would like to give it a go and learn a new sport to boost your personal statement then this just might be the sport for you! Our coaching philosophy is very much focussed around encouraging anyone that wants to play Hockey and assisting them in their development. CRICKET ACADEMY The Cricket Academy will start on the 8 th September The college has hired the Dorset Cricket Centre from pm for a 2 hour coached net session. The college has employed Greg Parsons (Dorset Cricket Coach) to deliver the coaching session. The college will provide a minibus that will leave the college at 12.40pm on Monday 8 th September 2014 from outside the front entrance of the Sports Hall, and return student for the college transport at 4.20pm on main site. Please bring your own equipment for the net session.

The Student Lock In is coming back to Portsmouth! Get down to Gunwharf Quays for a night of entertainment, giveaways and exclusive discounts at the UK's best student shopping event! The Student Lock In will be on Wednesday 8th October from 7pm pm. The event is completely free to attend for all students and comprises of entertainment, giveaways and exclusive discounts at your favourite stores - including brands which rarely give discount. Because we ALL have room for improvement; regardless of whether we’re a beginner to reducing waste or a bit of a seasoned pro. HOW COULD YOU REDUCE PLASTIC WASTE? Not one to ease you in gently, we’re going right in at the deep end.
