PMP® Exam Focus PMI announced an update to the PMP® examination starting August 31, 2011 PMBOK® Guide Fourth Edition will remain in effect, but 30% of exam content will change due to testing of the Professional and Social Responsibility content area (Domain 6) in every domain rather than as a separate domain on the examination. “Approximately 30% of the PMP exam content will change. Certain examination areas will be tested in a different way. Specifically, the Professional and Social Responsibility content area (Domain 6) will now be tested in every domain, rather than as a separate domain. The RDS revealed that professional and social responsibility is integrated into all of the work of project management. Therefore, PMI’s Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct should be viewed as integrated into the day-to-day role of a project manager and important in each phase of the project lifecycle.”

PMP® Exam Preparation Books First and foremost get and read PMI's PMBOK® Guide Fourth Edition, officially titled A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) Fourth Edition.  When you become a PMI member, you can download this this in pdf format for free.  Get it in print and wear it out before the exam. Following is a list of recommended books PMP Exam Prep Sixth Edition by Rita Mulcahy PMP Project Management Professional Exam Study Guide by Kim Heldman The PMP Exam: How to Pass on Your First Try by Andy Crowe Head First PMP by Jennifer Greene & Andrew Stellman PMP Exam Success Series: Bootcamp Manual by Crosswind There is also Crosswind CD ROM with 3500 exam simulation questions, which is a powerful study tool as well.

PMBOK® Guide Changes in Fourth Edition Starting on July 1, 2009 the PMP® Exam is on the Fourth Edition of the PMBOK® Guide. What has changed?  This pdf file by the editor of the Fourth Edition and this summary slide explain. The major differences between the Third Edition and the Fourth Edition are: 1. All process names are in a verb-noun format 2. Efforts were made to distinguish between Enterprise Environmental Factors and Organizational Process Assets. 3. A standard approach for discussing requested changes, preventive actions, corrective actions and defect repairs was employed. 4. The processes decreased from 44 to 42. Two processes were deleted, two processes were added and 6 processes were reconfigured into 4 processes in the procurement knowledge area. 5. To provide clarity a distinction was made between the project management plan and project documents used to manage the project. 6. The distinction between the information in the Project Charter and the Project Scope Statement was clarified. 7. The process flow diagrams at the beginning of chapters 4-12 have been deleted and replaced with data flow diagrams. 8. A data flow diagram for each process has been created to show where information comes from as an input and where it goes to as an output. 9. A new appendix was added that addresses key interpersonal skills that a project manager utilizes when managing a project. A complete list of changes can be found in Appendix A of the Fourth Edition.

PMP® Exam Passing Score PMBOK 3rd Ed. (old exam) What is a passing score on the PMP® Exam ? Well... it worked like this; there are 200 questions on the exam. Of these 200 questions, 25 are sample or pretest questions. These questions do not count toward your score (so right or wrong, they do not help you or hurt you). The purpose of these questions is for the PMI to consider them as future exam questions. This means you have 175 questions that count toward your score. Of these 175 questions you must correctly answer 106 or 61% to pass the exam. PMBOK 4th Ed. (new exam) PMI doesn't disclose the passing percentage. The only thing they say is "The passing score for all PMI credential examinations is determined by sound psychometric analysis”. Sorry, but there is no defined passing score for the PMP® Exam. Each of the 200 questions is weighted on a scale of difficulty. Depending on the number of easy to difficult questions among the 200 determines your passing score. E.g. if you have 60% difficult questions (as determined by PMI) you can score dramatically less than 61% and still pass. Lots of easy questions - higher passing score needed.
