Telecommunications – Why Invest? STRATHMORE UNIVERSITY 7th ICT CONFERENCE Emerging Technologies and Trends and the Future of ICT Sector in Kenya, 9 September 2006 By Edwin Muthi, Executive Director, Commercial popote wireless

Telecom Infrastructure in Kenya

Telecom Infrastructure 1. Facilitates the provision of lines to existing customers; 2. Enables Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to provide internet services to a wider customer base 3. Facilitates high-speed transmission of data and voice between subscribers 4. Facilitates the provision of fixed telephone lines to new customers thus contributing to an increase in the country’s tele-density

What types of Infrastructure are available?

Types of Infrastructure 1. Wire line – e.g. copper, fibre 2. Wireless – e.g. GSM, CDMA

What is CDMA?

Code Division Multiple Access

Features of CDMA 1. Supports both voice and data 2. High-voice capacity and high-speed packet data 3. Due to its optimized radio technology, CDMA2000 enables operators to invest in fewer cell sites and deploy them faster

Features of CDMA2000

Features of CDMA 1. High data throughput 2. Today's commercial CDMA X networks support a peak data rate of kbps. 3. CDMA x EV-DO, commercially enables peak rates of up to 2.4 Mbps

Features of CDMA 4. CDMA x EV-DV will be capable of delivering data at 5 Mbps. 5. Can be deployed in the 450, 800, 900, 1700, 1800, 1900 and 2100 MHz bands 6. Soft Hand-off 7. Voice and Data Channels

Why should we invest in voice & data for Kenyans?

Why invest? Landline capacity in Kenya – 500,000 Voice utilisation – under 300,000 Internet utilization – under 50,000 points

Why invest? 1% increase in voice tele-density – over US$ 250 GDP per person 1% increase in internet tele-density – over US$ 500 GDP per person

Thank you Asanteni
