Portraiture insists the artist embark on a journey of exploration in order to make decisions about how to represent the subject authentically.

For each portrait, the artist must ask: -What expression, posture, clothing, background, colors, texture, and style best express the real individual? - Will different situations change those answers?

Self-Portraits A Self Portrait is a picture that an artist takes of himself. Self-portraits are not just a reflection of what they look like but also of how the artist interprets themselves and the world around them.

THE ASSIGNMENT!!! Create a portrait utilizing the grid system. You will demonstrate your knowledge of value, shape, texture and form to create a successful drawing.

Step #1: Choosing a photograph Tomorrow the class will meet in the write zone. –Room 340 Computer Search. –Search for someone that you admire. –This person may be a family member, an athlete, an actor, a singer… etc. –The subject’s face can be on a front or ¾ angle. –Check to make sure the photo is in focus!!! –The photo must have DRAMATIC LIGHTING –Mrs. H will approve your picture then we will print

Step #2: Create Grid on final drawing paper (large white sheet) Mrs. H will walk you through this process

Step #3: - Create a corresponding grid on photograph -You will receive ONLY ONE copy of you picture - Create a grid on this portrait using a scale of 1” inch.

Step #4: Create a viewfinder

Step #5: Use your viewfinder to create your portrait!
