1 Portraiture Unit Three

2 The Face Drawing the face is a challenging endeavor, however, capturing a human subject realistically is a skill that is achievable. In this unit, patience and perseverance will be essential

3 To begin First, you will familiarize yourself with the features of the face, (ears, eyes, nose, mouth) and learn to sketch them. Second, we will look at the layout of the face and what lies beneath.

4 Summative assignment After completing exercises, everyone will complete a large scale self portrait in pencil, charcoal or white and black paint. You will choose from various methods of creating your portrait. (1) Projection (2) Grid (3) Free hand (4) Pixels (in the style of Chuck Close)

7 Projection The projector could be used to essentially trace the outline from your photo, and then without the projector you shade your drawing. OR free-hand draw your portrait on a small scale, and then photograph and project your small drawing onto a larger surface and trace the outline.

8 Goals Focus on tonal variations (scale from white to black with many shades of grey) Realistic quality (working from photograph) Thoughtful composition (how to fill the paper?) Large scale

9 Planning and Research Which method will you use to create your portrait? How will you compose your artwork? Explore the options for creating your self portrait, write paragraph(s) about your decision in your sketchbook. Research 2 artists/works of art related to black and white portraiture (drawing or painting). Print an image of each artwork and place in your sketchbook. Write one paragraph about what inspires you about each artwork.
