Bellringer Place your signed syllabus and info sheet in the Homework Bin under the lectern (the big black thing) You have 8 minutes to, on your own piece of paper, draw a map of the world that includes the following locations:  Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Australia, England/Great Britain, France, Spain, Russia, China, Japan, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, India, United States, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, Egypt, and Nigeria. BJOTD: Why do fish swim in saltwater?

Objectives The Students will know:  The 5 major religions of the world The Students will understand:  Respecting and understanding peoples’ beliefs is crucial to respecting and understanding people. The Students will be able to:  Identify the locations of the world's major religions  Identify the major beliefs of the world's major religions  Locate selected countries of the world on a map.

Hinduism Monotheistic—worship many forms of one god  But kind of polytheistic—many gods with different characteristics Founder=none Text(s)= Vedas, Upanishads Location= India and parts of SE Asia

Hinduism Main Beliefs:  Reincarnation based on your karma  Goal: achieve oneness with Brahman through the accumulation of good karma

Buddhism Monotheistic?  Depends!  Theravada Buddhists believe that Buddha is NOT a god—he is just a man who achieved Enlightenment  Mahayana Buddhists believe that Buddha was divine and a savior Founder=Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) Spread=by Asoka and his missionaries from India to China and other parts of Asia Texts=various

Location=  North and East Asia Main Beliefs=  Four Noble Truths and Eightfold Path lead to Nirvana  You need to sacrifice bad thoughts/words/deeds in order to reach Enlightenment
