The Narrative Essay A story or account of events, experiences, or the like, whether true or fictitious.

What is a Narrative Essay? As a mode of expository writing, the narrative approach, more than any other, offers writers a chance to think and write about themselves or a given topic. When you write a narrative essay, you are telling a story. Narrative essays are told from a defined point of view, often the author's, so there is feeling as well as specific and often sensory details provided to get the reader involved in the elements and sequence of the story.

This essay should be filled with details that are carefully selected to explain, support, or embellish the story. All of the details relate to the main point the writer is attempting to make. What is you PURPOSE? Who is your AUDIENCE? What is your GENRE?

To summarize the Narrative Essay: The story is told from a particular point of view. The story makes and supports a point. The story is filled with precise detail. The story uses vivid verbs and modifiers. The story uses conflict and sequence as does any story. The story will use dialogue to express reasons for characters emotions and actions.

Narratives should include: Setting Plot Characters Climax Ending The essay topic you choose should be interesting and important to you, because the best essays are written on the topics that really matter to the writer.

Beginning, Middle, and End Stories should have a beginning, middle, and end. You should determine how the story begins. What happens in the middle? (Where the bulk of the action will take place.) How does the story end? What do we learn?

How to Move an Event Through Time One way to move an event through time is by choosing words that reflect this movement. (Descriptive words) Some words that show movement through time are meanwhile, before, after, during, and suddenly. There are many more. You should choose the ones that make the most sense for your story.

Rising Action & Big Moment The story should have a big moment, or climax, and it should have events leading up to that big moment. Don’t make the mistake of rushing through this integral part of the story. This part needs to be slowed down as much as possible in order to build suspense.

Rising Action & Big Movement Slow down your big movement by using sensory detail to describe what is happening. Your story must contain at least four to five paragraphs in your stories rising action and climax.

Resolution Stories need endings. You should resolve your conflict and wrap up any loose ends to reinforce your main points. There is no need to leave your readers wondering what happens next. (This means no “To be continued” endings.)

Use Dialogue Done correctly; dialogue can really increase your stories validity and emotional characteristics of specific characters. Dialogue is the verbal exchange between two or more people.
