Basin Guajira Generalities PROSPECTIVITY The productive capacity of the basin is supported by geochemical analyses showing a thermogenic generation potential for gas in Paleogene and Neogene units, present in Chuchupa, Ballenas fields, and for oil, possibly of Cretaceous origin, as found in Aruchara-1 well samples, in offshore Piston Cores, in Lower Guajira micro seeps and in oil impregnated cores of La Luna formation in a well near Venezuelan in the eastern Lower Guajira. Additional opportunities for exploration are identified, related to hydrocarbon charge from a Cretaceous kitchen located east of the basin as suggested by information fromwells drilled in the Venezuelan side.

Location

PETROLEUM GEOLOGY Macarao Formation In the upper part, this unit predominantly consists of sandstone, and in the lower part, it is mainly formed by shales. The porosity vary between 11% and 19%, and the thickness of the rock with hydrocarbon could vary between 25 – 100 feet The Shales in this formation have a potential to generate; and the type of Kerogen is II and III, with enough depth to generate in north part of Pta Espada.

PETROLEUM GEOLOGY Siamana Formation It is mainly composed by carbonates; analysis from Piston Core samples show some of the offshore sector as a potential source rock. Its potential consists in kerógen type II y III, gas generator. The Sandstones in this formation have a potential as reservoir rock with net pay between 5 y 75 feet and porosity between 12% y 17%. The clay levels in this formation work like seal rock.

PETROLEUM GEOLOGY Uitpa Formation The Uitpa Formation mainly consists of one clastic sequence, interbedded with shales and limestone. It has been reported crude in the cores, witch generation is conected with shales of this formation. The principal kerogen is type II yIII. The net pay in sandstones and calcareous levels in this formation vary between 400 and 1200 feet

PETROLEUM GEOLOGY Jimol Formation It is formed in the bottom predominantly by carbonates and on the top by fine-grained sandstones, slightly calcareous, and black shales. Litologic this formation is identified as potential generator of kerógeno type II and III, principally it is gas generator. In the sandstones and limestones, the net pay could vary between 30 and 75 feet.

PETROLEUM GEOLOGY Castilletes Formation Lithologic sequence comprising intercalations of clays, siltstones and sandstones. This unit is wedged into the Cocinas Range, thickening to the west of the basin, and also constitutes a seal for the reservoir rocks in the area.

Prospectividad de la Cuenca Geochemical modeling that has been carried out in the Guajira Peninsula suggest that the generation of hydrocarbons is mainly of thermogenic type, and that it occurs in the deepest parts of the basin depocenters where source rocks reach the needed burial and thermal maturity conditions to generate them. In the Higher Guajira Sub-basin, silisiclastic rocks of Eocene and Oligocene age, corresponding to the Macarao and Siamaná formations, are the main storage rocks. They have porosities between 11 and 19% and between 14 and 21%, respectively, with a total thickness of rock in which hydrocarbons can vary between 15 and 100 feet according to the geographical position in the basin. The calcareous rocks of the Jimol Formation, and the basement is interesting in the basin, since there are similitude with La Paz and Mara fields in Venezuela. The structural arrangement of the Lower Guajira Sub-basin is defined by a north-south semi- graben a bounded by the Cuiza and Oca faults. However there are compresive structural stytles associated to thrusting that involve cretaceus rocks in the southeast sector of the lower Guajira Subasin. The high Guajira Sub basin has a structural arrange in blocks associated to strike slip basin. In the same way, there are stratigraphic traps associated to the clicking of the Tertiary units over the basement.
