Merit Scholarships at Carolina: Why Do We Have Them?  They are a much-needed recruitment tool and help us compete with our peer institutions, which tend to vie for the same students.  They show high-achieving students that they are wanted by the University and that their potential for excellence and success in college has been recognized.  They send a message about the caliber of the student body overall at Carolina, which is a benefit to all students.

Merit Scholarships at Carolina  Last year 211 merit scholarships were awarded and accepted, including Morehead-Cain and Robertson.  Less than 6% of last year’s incoming class entered Carolina with the benefit of a merit scholarship. Consider this:  17% of last year’s incoming class was either valedictorian or salutatorian, and 40% was ranked 1-10.

Merit Scholarships: More than just $$$  Results of Scholar Day determine size of merit awards. These range from small annual awards of $2,500 to full- cost scholarships. Successful Scholar Day invitees also are invited into the Honors Program.  For four scholarship types, we offer faculty mentoring, experiential learning opportunities, and involvement in scholar-initiated activities.  For many scholarship candidates, the programming benefits are what ultimately yields them, rather than the size of the dollar amount.
