“” “WOW” Your Judge At Competition

What is Competition? Role plays/interviews and a test Based on skills in a Marketing series Why would I want to take a test? ◦ Go to State and Internationals (fun traveling) ◦ Create necessary skills for careers in almost anything, plus skills in interview-taking. ◦ Professional Development Points ◦ Fun! ◦ Scholarships

When is Districts? Districts – February 6 ◦ Held at Chesterfield Mall ◦ Test and role plays ◦ Free time to eat, shop, friends

When is State? State – March ◦ Held at Four Seasons at the Lake ◦ LOTS of FUN!

What Happens If I Do Well At State? Internationals ◦ April ◦ Held in Anaheim, Calif. ◦ Lots of fun, down-time, touring

So What Events Can I Enter? Individual Series ◦ On your own ◦ Advantage: you control how well you do and more go to State from each section Management Team Decision Making ◦ With a partner ◦ Advantage: somebody to role play with

Management Team Decision Making Events Business Law & Ethics Buying & Merchandising Financial Analysis Hospitality Services Marketing Communication Sports & Entertainment Marketing Travel & Tourism Marketing 100 question multiple-choice test on your own, 1 role plays with partner in front of one judge

Individual Events Apparel & Accessories Automotive Services Business Finance Business Services Food Marketing Hotel & Lodging Mgmt Human Resource Mgmt Marketing Mgmt Quick Serve Restaurant Management Restaurant & Food Service Management Retail Merchandising Sports & Entertainment 100 question multiple-choice test and two role plays by yourself with a judge.

The Beginning of Your WOW Factor Check into your role play event Given a role play sheet You get 10 mins. to read your situation and prepare for your role play.

How Do You Prepare?? Read your situation Know your position and the judge’s in the role play (manager, employee, etc.) Read the “Point Indicators” ◦ This is how you will be graded

Set Yourself Up For Success Take some notes on the scratch piece of paper. Use bullet form, short, easy to look at fast. Don’t write every detail down. Make sure you can answer something with each point indicator. ◦ Make something up if not. Do some extra’s if time (talked about later)

An Example of a Role Play SITUATION: You are to assume the role of an experienced employee of a successful kitchenware store. The store sells high-end cookware and gourmet food items. It is located in a small shopping center located in an affluent suburb. The local population consists of professional, two-income couples and singles. The store’s owner has asked you to orient a new employee by providing information about the store. During the training, the employee asks you why the store always has what customers want. POINT INDICATORS You will be on how well you meet the following performance indicators: ◦ Explain target market ◦ Explain demographics, psychographics, and geographics ◦ Explain the concept of product mix ◦ Describe how you get customers into your store

Time to Start the WOW Factor! Approach judge with a smile and shake hand firmly. Wait to have a seat until they offer. They will tell you to begin with your solution to the situation. Remember your role in the role play.

Using Those WOW Skills Start out by looking judge in the eyes. Use notes sparingly, as to not read directly from them, but to use them as a guide. Speak slowly and clearly. Stay focused. Keep hands at bay. Just act like you know what you are talking about. Use your marketing terms, if possible

Role Play Continued… After you finish answering, the judge may ask you 2 questions. Act like you know what you’re talking about, if you have no clue Always points for that. (Confidence is key) This process may only take 2-10 minutes Thank the judge for their time and shake hand once again before you leave.

WOW Points with the Judge If applicable to your role play… ◦ Make a fake business card drawn on your preparation sheet ◦ Draw graphs ◦ Create an ad Just simple things such as these impress a judge!! These can be done during your prep time.

AND Dress For Success VERY IMPORTANT Judge’s first impression what you are wearing.

SHOW ME Your WOW Factor Any Volunteers???
