Four images of leadership  Analyst  Caregiver  Warrior  Wizard

Why wizards and warriors?  We need warriors because conflict is universal and they help us face opponents who block us from winning  We need wizards to help us imagine and see creative new possibilities – they bring faith, magic and hope  Leaders need guts and magic

The Warrior Essence  Courage  Clout  Skill  Discipline

Warrior Types  Toxic – Driven by inner turmoil – Focus on power and self-interest – Constituents are tools

Warrior Types  Toxic  Relentless – Passionate about building a winning team – Rather fight than change – Constituents are either allies or enemies

Warrior Types  Toxic  Relentless  Principled – Bedrock sense of values and purpose – Winning is a means, not an end; focus on larger purpose – Constituents valued and respected both as allies and as people

How Warriors Work  Know what you’re fighting for  Keep your eye on the prize  Persist in the face of opposition.  Choose your battles  Be strategic –out-think your opponents  Find courage in the cause to take risks and to sacrifice when the mission requires it – Put purpose ahead of self-interest

The Wizard Essence  Imagination  Insight  Wisdom  Faith

Wizard Types  Harmful wizard – Powerful dark magic in service of power and self- aggrandizement – Sow seeds of destruction Andrew Fastow, Former Enron CEO

Wizard Types  Harmful wizard  Wannabe – Good intentions, weak magic – Overreach (like Icarus, fly too close to the sun, then crash) Carly Fiorina, Ex-CEO, HP

Wizard Types  Harmful wizard  Wannabe  Authentic – Magic rooted in soul, faith, and dreams of a better world – Build enduring institutions

The Wizard of the Cafes “A company can grow big without losing the passion and personality that built it, but only if it’s driven not by profits but by people…The key is heart. I pour my heart into every cup of coffee and so do my partners at Starbucks. When customers sense that, they respond in kind…If you pour your heart into your work, you can achieve dreams others may think impossible. That’s what makes life rewarding.” Howard Schultz, Founder, Starbucks

How Wizards Work  Show people new possibilities  Take people to a deeper, more inspiring, magical world  Find hidden paths to the grail  Challenge people to elevate dreams and find faith in their pursuit

Qualities of Great Leadership  Focus  Passion  Courage  Wisdom  Integrity
