Peninsulas and Islands of Southeast Asia Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and the Philippines

Objectives Identify Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines on a blank map. Discuss the different religions of this area.

Terms and Places Malacca Strait is an important area for sea trade. Malay Peninsula is a long, narrow piece of land stretching south from Asia. An archipelago is a group of islands (ARK-ih-PELL-ih-go). Singapore is an independent city-nation in Southeast Asia. Java, Sumatra, Manila

Ten countries exist in southeast Asia. Five of these lie on the mainland. Five of these lie are island groups. Malaysia is both on the mainland and on and island.

The majority ethnic group in Malaysia is called Malay. However, a quarter of the people in Malaysia are Chinese.

Borneo The two towers in Kuala Lumpur are among the tallest buildings in the world. Much of Malaysia's population is on the mainland. The island of Borneo is mostly dense jungles.

Both Malaysia and Indonesia have dense, remote jungle areas... …and huge, modern cities.

Indonesia consists of over thirteen thousand islands.

Indonesia is the fourth most populous nation on Earth. Much of Indonesia’s population is on the island of Java.

Indonesia has many ethnic groups, but most of them are related. The people of Irian Barat, in the east, look different and speak a language from a different group.

The Philippines are the northernmost of the island nations.

The Philippines is an archipelago. The Philippines has a large island at the north called Luzon. The capital city of Manila is on Luzon. The Philippines also has a large island at the south. Between these two large islands, the Philippines has many smaller islands.

The Philippines have a much smaller land mass than the United States. Because the Philippines is an archipelago, they are more spread out than any similar landmass in the United States.

The northern island of Luzon is the richest. The Philippines tends to be poorer further south. What does this map tell about the Philippines?

Recently, the Chinese have laid claim to important fishing islands which the Philippines also claim.

The Islamic minority in the south has rebelled. The Philippines is the only Catholic nation in Asia. The Philippines accounts for more than half of all Catholics in Asia.
