2 The region is home to the descendants of migrants from Asia and other places.

3 Throughout history, various seafaring people have tried to control the region Because of its important shipping lanes.

4 Hinduism and Buddhism influence the history of the area. Huge monuments, like the Borobudur in Java, were built.

5 In the 1300’s Arabs began trading with the region, and they introduced Islam. Islam is the main religion of island Southeast Asia today.

6 Europeans called this region The Spice Islands. They were searching for cloves, nutmeg, and pepper.

7 The Spanish conquered the Philippines in 1521, Which were named after King Philip II. They converted the people to Roman Catholicism.

8 After the Spanish American War, The US took over the Philippines.

9 The Dutch went to the Spice Islands for trade, And colonized the islands that make up Indonesia today. They called it the Dutch East Indies.

10 The British set up colonies on the Malay peninsula, and founded the port city of Singapore.

11 After WWII many countries in the region gained independence.

12 Migration and colonization have created a diverse population in the region. In Indonesia, for example, no one main ethnic group is the majority.

13 Malaysia is mainly ethnic Malay. There are many Chinese immigrants in the region.

14 The Philippines is the region’s most homogenous country. Homogenous means “of the same kind.”

15 Indonesia has 225 million people, About half of which live on Java island.

16 Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim country.

17 The country of Singapore Which is a small island, is almost completely urbanized.
