LESSON 6 – SEDIMENTARY ROCKS EARTH UNIT All information is from

OBJECTIVE The students will identify the characteristics of sedimentary rock

VOCABULARY sedimentary rock : rocks formed from layers of the remains of older rocks that have been squeezed together sediments : loose fragments of rock deposited in one place by wind, water or ice pressure : applying force to something by something else being in direct contact with it.

HOW ARE ROCKS FORMED? Today we will be using the rock formation chart to help us understand the formation and location of sedimentary rocks. Materials: brown, yellow, red, orange, and black crayons pencil formation chart

HOW ARE SEDIMENTARY ROCKS FORMED Sedimentary rocks form when fragments of rocks, shells, sand and clay settle at the bottom of a lake or ocean and are slowly pressed and cemented together.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF A ROCK IS SEDIMENTARY? Most sedimentary rocks are soft. Some can be crumbled, split, or broken with your hands. Sandstone and gypsum are examples of this kind of sedimentary rock. Gypsum is used to make casts for broken bones. sandstone gypsumOuch!

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF A ROCK IS SEDIMENTARY? If the rock has big fragments(pieces)of shells and pebbles, it is a sedimentary rock. Conglomerate and brecia are examples of this kind of sedimentary rock. conglomerate brecia

SEDIMENTARY ROCK LAYERS Sedimentary rocks can have distinct layers. Sometimes these layers have different colors or textures. Shale is an example of this kind of sedimentary rock shale layers shale

REVIEW With a partner and your chart explain: How sedimentary rocks are formed Where they can are found

SEDIMENTARY ROCK EXPERIMENT Making Sedimentary Rocks! 1.Go outside and filled an empty bottle halfway with sediment, grass, and small twigs. 2.Then add 1/4 cup of Epsom salt to the bottle 3.Filled the bottle the rest of the way with water, then shake, hard! 4.Let sit overnight and then drain the water and let dry completely, cut away the plastic to reveal your rock!!
