WEATHERING: - cementation and compaction of weathered material on the earth’s surface creates sedimentary rocks Weathering is the process of breaking down rocks and minerals into smaller pieces by water, wind, and ice.

-Sedimentary rocks are formed from broken pieces of rocks. These broken pieces of rock are called sediments. -The word "Sedimentary" comes from the root word "Sediment". - Usually formed in water - formed in layers

3 GROUPS OF SEDIMENTARY ROCKS Fragmental( clastic): made up of different sized particles. EX: Clay and Sandstone Organic: Form from the accumulation of plant and/or animal remains Ex: coal and some forms of limestone

Chemical: deposited by settling of materials from a solution in seawater. (evaporation) -Evaporites include; rock salt and Gypsum

RIPPLES IN BEACH SAND---> RIPPLES THAT HAVE HARDENED INTO ROCK SEDIMENTARY ROCK FORMATION

LARGEST PIECES

SANSTONE: -GRAINY FEELING

SHALE -MADE OF SMALLER PIECES THAN LIMESTONE

SILSTONE:SMALLEST SEDIMENT PIECES

Organic Limestone

COAL: ORGANIC

ROCK SALT: EVAPORITE

Mineral crystals are made as the shallow water that has flooded the bottom of Death Valley evaporates. Courtesy of Martin Miller, University of Oregon ROCK SALT FORMATION

ROCK GYPSUM: PRECIPITATE

LIMESTONE: LAYERED -SMALLER SEDIMENTS THAN SANDSTONE

FOSSIL LIMESTONE

Ripple Marks RIPPLES IN BEACH SAND --------> RIPPLES THAT HAVE HARDENED INTO ROCK ----------->
