Presentation transcript:

Like the Egyptians, the West Asians, the Carthaginians, the Greeks and the Etruscans before them, the Romans built many temples for their gods. One of the first buildings we know of in Rome is the Capitoline Temple, which was built on top of the Capitoline Hill under the kings of Rome. It was a temple for three gods, Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. But that temple has been completely destroyed, and only little bits of the foundations are left today. By Lucila Casas, Nazarena Fernandez Cobian and Camila Simsiroglu (Capitoline temple)

Julius Caesar Temple Julius Caesar Temple Antuninus and Faustina Temple Antuninus and Faustina Temple Saturn Temple Imperial temple End Venus temple

Erected by Augustus in 29 BC by restructuring the Roman Forum. Situated in the very spot where his body was cremated. A column of marble had already been placed here in memory of the "founding father" as the inscription read, and inserted into a true emperor's propaganda program. Julius Caesar Temple (Julius Caesar Temple) MENU

Menu Identifies this temple as the Emperor Antuninus Pius and his wife Faustina. In fact, the emperor had erected in the honor of Faustina to his death in 141 AD. When Antuninus died in 161 AD a decrete of the Senate dedicated the temple to the deified royal couple. The building reached our days in good conditions because in the early Middle Ages it was built the church of San Lorenzo “in Miranda”. In the vicinity of the temple have been found interesting fragments sculptures, also belonging to the statues representing the imperial couple. Antuninus and Faustina Temple (Temple of Antoninus and Faustina)

Saturn Temple The Temple of Saturn is a monument to the agricultural deity Saturn that stands at the western end of the Forum Romanum in Rome. Gradual collapse has left nothing but the remains of the front portico standing, but the eight surviving columns and partially intact pediment represent one of the iconic images of Rome's ancient architectural heritage. According to the sources, the statue of the god in the interior, veiled and provided with a scythe, was wooden and filled with oil. The legs were covered with linen bents, which were released only on December 17, the day of the Saturnalia (Saturn Trmple)

The Temple of Venus and of Rome was the largest known temple in Ancient Rome. Located at the far east side of the Forum Romanum,it was dedicated to the goddesses Venus Felix and Roma Aeterna. The architect was the emperor Hadrian. Since the papacy of John Paul II, the heights of the temple and its position opposite the main entrance to the Colosseum have been used to good effect as a public address platform. Venus Temple (Venus Temple)

Imperial Temples The temples built in the Forum Romanum during the Imperial era (27 B.C. – A.D. 476) were largely built to commemorate mortal men who had been deified after death. These were usually Emperors of Rome who had been particularly influential and popular. There are 4 IMPERIAL TEMPLES: Forum of Julius Caesar Forum of Augustus Forum of Nerva Trajan’s Forum
