Welcome…. …to Cub Scouting This template provides the basic information for starting a new Pack or providing information to new parents interested in joining an existing pack. Slide 5 requires a change to put in the Pack number; you may also want to modify the focus for your pack. Slide 18 has costs for joining that you need to modify.

Purpose of Tonight’s Meeting To explain the Cub Scouting program. To explain opportunities for parents to participate with son in Scouting program. To complete registrations forms and collect Scouting fees.

Scouting’s Mission “It is the mission of the Boy Scouts of America to serve others by helping to instill values in in young people and in other ways prepare them to make ethical choices over their lifetime in achieving their full potential. The values we strive to instill are based on those found in the Cub Scout Promise, Cub Scout Motto and the Law of the Pack.”

Cub Scout Promise I…. (state your name)…. Promise to do my best To do my duty to God and my country. To help other people, and To obey the Law of the Pack.

The Law of the Pack The Cub Scout follows Akela. The Cub Scout helps the Pack go. The Pack helps the Cub Scout grow. The Cub Scout gives goodwill.

Parent’s Agreement I have read the Promise and I want my son to join the pack. I will assist him in observing the policies of the BSA and chartered organization. I will: While he is a Tiger Cub, serve as his adult partner and participate in all meetings and activities. While he is a Cub Scout, help him and approve his Cub Scout advancement. Attend monthly pack meetings and take part in other activities; assist pack leaders as needed.

Cub Scout Membership Family-centered program. Boys and parents join a Pack. Meets monthly. Assigned to a den (same grade boys). Meets weekly. Parent-led committee runs Pack.

Cub Scout Pack Organization Have your Chartered Organization Representative at any of your meetings to get the Pack going and make sure he/she is introduced to the parents. This gets your Chartered Organization involved from the very start.

Program Leadership Program leadership is totally volunteer. Over 3,500 volunteers in Lewis & Clark Council, BSA. Active parental support is needed. “Many hands make light work.” Opportunity to get involved with your son.

Part of the Lewis & Clark Council, BSA Our pack is part of the Lewis & Clark Council, BSA. Serves over 17,000 young people with a variety of Scouting programs across the county. Who Pays For It? Cub Scouting program is supported by families. $15.00 for annual BSA membership. $12.00 for optional Boy’s Life Magazine. Additional den and pack dues for activities and awards. Additional support of council through Friends of Scouting at first of year.

Advancement Plan Recognition is important to boys. Advancement plan provides fun for boys. Gives sense of personal achievement. Strengthens family understanding. Opportunity for parents to be involved. Each grade level has its own book.

Summer Activities Cub Scouts Webelos Day Camp Resident Camp Use the resources from Council and District to discuss these opportunities if you are not familiar with them. Your district executive is a great resource for a starting pack.

What’s Next? The cost of joining. Parental involvement in the pack and dens. Separate by age group (Tigers, Wolf, Bear, Webelos) and meet the scouts and parents. Become familiar with den – meeting times, locations, etc. Complete applications (both youth and adult).

What’s the Cost for Joining? Cub Scout registration – $60* Cub Scout Leader registration – $15 Uniforms $60-67** Set your joining fee as you see fit. Different packs handle finances differently. Some have the parents just pay the BSA registration fee and then collect den dues. Some make Boy’s Life mandatory, others make it optional. Some include the dues needed for a year in a single payment or semi-annual payments (i.e., $50/year or two $25 payments in Sep and Feb). The best thing to do is develop a budget and come up with an estimated cost per scout to run the program for a year. Then work with parents to see if that cost will be covered by the parents or offset by fundraising like popcorn sales, etc. * The registration fee includes BSA registration, subscription to Boy’s Life, and covers the cost of materials used during the year ** Uniforms may be available from our loan closet

Pack Organization List your leadership needs. If you have small dens and few leaders you may need to group grade levels. Tiger – one leader is okay since a parent must accompany each scout anyway; an assistant is nice if the leader is not available Wolf – a den leader and assistant are necessary because of the two-deep leadership rule Bear – same as Wolf Webelos - a den leader and assistant are necessary because of the two-deep leadership rule; at least one of these leaders need to be willing to camp with the scouts as camping is an integral part of the program Don’t neglect the Pack Committee. You may find adults who are interested in leadership but find hands on activities with scouts outside their comfort zone. Use these organizers to keep the finances and do the big planning for the major activities like Pinewood Derby, Blue and Gold Banquet, etc.

Pack Organization Where do we need leaders to get started? Cubmaster Tiger Den Leader Wolf Den Leader & Assistant Bear Den Leader & Assistant Webelos I & II Leaders & Assistants Committee Members You may already have leader positions filled. If so, only list those needed to get the program off the ground. You may also want to highlight the need for committee leaders who help with planning for events like the Pinewood Derby, Blue and Gold Banquet, etc.

Meet Your Den Meet with other parents in your scout’s den Get to know each other Who can serve as leader? Who can help? If you have scouts in different dens, find which den has the greater need and volunteer there. Make sure you volunteer for something! “Many hands make light work!”

Fill Out Application Please open your son’s Cub Scout application and begin completing it. Cub Scout fees to collect tonight include: Application Fee Boy’s Life Magazine (optional) Get your parents to commit. Collecting money is a good sign that your parents are going to continue with the program. If you don’t collect money and applications at the night of your presentation, then set up another meeting time to collect applications and money.

Fill Out Application Please open your adult volunteer application and begin completing it. Complete a skills survey You’re going to need leaders, so get a commitment out of your parents. Find out what skills they have (who can sew, do woodworking, etc.) Then follow-up to provide training and encouragement to leaders and other volunteers.
