What is ArcGIS? Comprehensive, integrated GIS system Single to multi-user functionality Increased functionality from ArcView to ArcINFO

What is ArcGIS? Made of two primary applications: ArcMap ArcCatalog Three license levels of functionality: ArcView, ArcEditor and ArcINFO

Which Do I Use? ArcMap Map production Geocoding Map Analysis Day-to-day queries and analysis ArcCatalog Create new data Manage existing data holdings Preview data Document data with metadata

ArcCatalog Similar to Windows Explorer A window into your database Browse and manage data Preview data and attributes Create and view metadata

ArcCatalog- Metadata Data about data Metadata tab Description Spatial Attributes Preview and search data and attributes Create, edit and view metadata

ArcToolbox Geographic processing functions Data management and conversion tools Tools and Wizards Tools vary with ArcGIS products A dockable window accessible from ArcMap or ArcCatalog

ArcMap Primary display application Perform map-based tasks Displaying, mapping, and editing Querying and analyzing Charting Reporting

ArcMap Interface Data/Layout View Context menu Menu bar Title bar Data Frame Standard toolbar Layers Table of Contents Toolbar

Data View and Layout View Data View for display, queries, editing and analysis Layout View for creating map layouts

Layers, data frames and maps Layer(s) Represents one data source from hard drive. Data frame Organizes layers More than one data frame can exist A map document contains Data frames Layers Map elements

Layers Reference spatial data sources: shapefiles, geodatabase feature classes, imagery, etc. Have a properties dialog box for setting symbology, labeling, definition queries Right-click on layer

Changing symbol properties Right- click Left- click

Querying/Analyzing Data Identify Find Select by Attribute Select by Location Select by Graphics Use the draw tools

Querying/Analyzing Data – cont.

Tip – Make your life easier You save your work in a “map document” (.mxd). Map documents do not store data, only references/pointers to the data sources which make up layers in ArcMap. Save your work often…

Toolbars & Extensions Right- click

Layouts One layout per map document Data frame(s) automatically appear on layout Layout toolbar Insert menu to add layout graphics (legend, scale bar, north arrow etc.)
