The Respiratory System

Essential Questions What are the major systems of the human body? How does the Respiratory System help my body function? What are the major parts of the Respiratory System?

What does the Respiratory System Do? You need oxygen to stay alive. Oxygen gives your body energy. The Respiratory System is a group of organs and tissues that exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide between your body and the environment.

What does the Respiratory System Do? When you breathe in, your body gets oxygen. When you breathe out, you breathe out carbon dioxide- waste from the body.

2. Removes Carbon Dioxide The Bottom Line... The Respiratory System... 1. Provides Oxygen 2. Removes Carbon Dioxide

The Respiratory System Your body uses its respiratory system to get oxygen from the air. The major parts of your respiratory system include: nose and mouth, your trachea, your two lungs, and diaphragm.

The Respiratory System Air enters the body through the nose and mouth then travels down the trachea (the “windpipe,” or what connects your pharynx to your lungs) The trachea branches into two tubes called bronchi, which lead to the lungs. At the end of the bronchi are tiny tubes called alveoli, small air sacs. Carbon dioxide and oxygen are exchanged in the alveoli and the oxygen rich blood enters the body through the pulmonary veins.

Main part of the Respiratory System LUNGS

The Diaphragm The diaphragm is the muscle that causes you to breathe. When you breathe in, your diaphragm expands (like a balloon). When you breathe out, your diaphragm contracts, or deflates. hiccups are involuntary contractions of the diaphragm

What’s the Purpose? As the blood passes through the lungs, it picks up the oxygen and takes it to the cells of the body, where the blood then picks up carbon dioxide and returns it to the lungs.
