CHARLES DARWIN UNIVERSITY What is an IR Way of managing and disseminating the University’s digital assets by storing them in a central place, and enabling them to searched and retrieved for later use. Digital assets are items or objects or publications in digital form

CHARLES DARWIN UNIVERSITY Why an IR for CDU? Enables staff and institutions to manage and preserve digital content, thereby deriving maximum value from it Increases the impact factor Intellectual assets consist of more than what is published in scholarly literature

CHARLES DARWIN UNIVERSITY Submission process An item is submitted by a researcher to the repository using an online template developed by LIA Part of the above process will involve the author giving permission to make the item available to end-users and to convert it as necessary for digital access and preservation purposed

CHARLES DARWIN UNIVERSITY Submission process (cont) An internal review by LIA confirms the submitter is authorized to contribute to the repository Metadata is assigned – usually this is by the author initially, augmented by LIA staff. Metadata ensures users can search/browse to find a particular item

CHARLES DARWIN UNIVERSITY Submission process (cont) Document format is transferred to a known/acceptable format if necessary A unique document identifier and a persistent URL is assigned by LIA to ensure ongoing availability Access rules applied Item loaded into IR and made available
