Welcome An introduction to Staff Development and Review Hosted by Helen Jones and Ellie Hartup

Introductions Name Department What do you want to get from today?

Objectives By the end of the session you will be able to: Describe the objectives of the Staff Development and Review (SDR) scheme at BSU Explain the principles of the scheme Follow the SDR flowchart Complete the first draft of the SDR form, in preparation for your review

Objectives of SDR To encourage staff to reflect on their own performance To provide staff with the opportunity for formalised, structured feedback on performance To communicate to all staff, through dialogue and discussion, the corporate goals of the institution

Strategic Objectives 1.Continue to improve the quality and relevance of our academic provision. 2.Deliver a high quality of student experience and increase the amount of employer responsive provision. 3.Fulfil our HEFCE, TDA and CWDC contracts. 4.Undertake research and scholarly activity. 5.Raise income from non-governmental sources. 6.Manage finances and assets in a sound, business-like fashion. 7.Increase the number of international students at the university and taught provision in other countries. 8.To take full advantage of technology in all our activities including e-learning tools to support all academic staff and students. 9.Reduce, reuse and recycle wastes and to maintain and enhance biodiversity. 10.Ensure equality of opportunity for staff and students and widen overall access to the university. 11.Recruit and retain the highest quality staff.

Objectives of SDR To assist staff in setting objectives which are consistent with the goals of the institution To provide a structured process for identifying staff development needs To contribute to the personal and career development of staff

Principles of the scheme – quick quiz 1.Reviewers must not discriminate on the grounds of gender, race or disability – TRUE or FALSE? 2.The SDR process determines what you’re paid – TRUE or FALSE? 3.How often does SDR happen, and when? 4.Who has access to the SDR form, once the review is completed? 5.If I disagree with the outcome of the review, there is nothing I can do about it – TRUE or FALSE? 6.The SDR is an opportunity for staff and not a threat – TRUE or FALSE? 7.My manager will discuss things with me in my SDR that have not come up before – TRUE or FALSE? 8.Responsibility for the SDR is shared between reviewer and member of staff – TRUE or FALSE?

Preparation Good preparation makes all the difference! Attend training if you have not had a SDR at BSU before Set aside time to reflect on your performance Complete a draft of the SDR form and send it to your line manager at least 2 weeks before the discussion. Read the step by step guide to the form to help you Ensure your diary is clear either side of the time allocated to the SDR discussion to allow you to give it your full attention

Revisit Objectives By the end of the session you will be able to: Describe the objectives of the Staff Development and Review (SDR) scheme at BSU Explain the principles of the scheme Follow the SDR flowchart Complete the first draft of the SDR form, in preparation for your review
