Nunta în Borod. Mireasa Wedding from Borod The Bride Made by: Realizat de: Topai Madalina V-th grade

When young people reached a mutual agreement to marry, their families negotiated the fate of the young people and the dowry which had to be given to every young person, and the place where they will live. The dowry for girls consisted of pillows, blankets, cloth, bridal diapers sewn by the bride before they wed, bed counterpanes woven into the loom, linen or hemp kitchen towels also woven in the loom. After reaching an agreement our wedding was to take place.

In the week before the wedding at the bride’s home started the preparations. The noodles named “Pături” were cut (noodles of white wheat flour and eggs) for the chicken soup, the sponge cakes with jam, apples and walnuts were baked, the chickens were prepared for the soup, the cabbages for the forcemeat rolls. Each family who was to come to the wedding brought “cinste", that is a basket of goods to prepare various meals: flour, eggs, jam, a hen, and what any family could. A skilled woman was the cook who took charge of preparing the menu.

The bride was dressed up by the most beautiful women and girls from the village who were singing a song while dressing her: “Bride say good bye To your father and your mother To your brothers and sisters and to the field with flowers." The bride was wearing a new white cloth shirt, embroidered waistcoat, an apron, as shoes “opinci” (rubber shoes fastened with leather laces) and on the head a wreath of wheat with spice flowers. The bride once ready waited together with all the girls in the village and her neighbours, for the groom and his group: attendants, wedding participants.

When the groom came the bride’s house gate was locked, but in the yard there were the bride’s guests. At the gate there was a speaker for the bride who negotiated with the groom’s speaker the unlocking of the entrance and asking for the bride to go to church for the religious wedding. When the bride was requested the speaker first brings a fake bride. The groom’s speaker says: This one is made on a spindle May she be taken by who brought her After that moment the speaker brings the real bride and then the speaker who leads the ceremony begs forgiveness from the bride’s parents, brothers, sisters and neighbours.

The bride and groom, together with all the guests were seated at the table while the music band sang. After eating the dish and drinking a few alcohol glasses everybody went to the church from the bride’s village for the ceremony. On the way a few lads, guests of the bride who would wanted to be her chosen one tied the road with a rope or a wire not to let them go to church as a revenge they weren’t chosen to be her husband. That is when the best men have to pay them a bottle of alcohol named “palinca” or money for letting the road free so the bride can go to church.

The band sang all the way and merry women said incantations. After the religious wedding everybody went to the groom’s house where was the party. On the house’s stairs was the bride’s mother-in-law who had in front of her a table with a bowl of wheat, basil and holly water and waited to ask her daughter-in-law a few questions: The mother-in-law: What have you brought daughter-in-law? The bride: Bread and salt so I could be the boss. After this the bride scatters the wheat over the guests, she sprinkles the holly water with the basil for wealthand after that she received from the mother-in-law a cake which she shared with the guests. Then the daughter- in-law hit a bucket of water as a retort, so she can be the boss of the house.

The house where the wedding took place was ornated with woven towels put over clay dishes on the walls, hand made or woven blankets also on the walls and on the floor woven door mats. The wedding lasted a day and night and at the end, after the bride threw the bouquet (the one that catches it is the next to get married), she became a wife helped by a few unmarried girls who sat her on a chair and replaced her wreath with a kerchief. The wedding gift from the best men’s families consisted of necessary house objects, money and other things. During the wedding there was the bride’s dance at which participated young men who payed for dancing with the bride.
