Newly Recommended wheat and oilseed rape varieties Richard Fenwick

New Recommendations 27 new Cereal and Oilseed rape varieties –8 winter wheat –8 oilseed rape –3 winter barley –4 spring barley –2 spring wheat –2 spring oats Which ones are worth considering?

Winter wheat

Winter wheat New Recommended Varieties Group 1 - None (but one new spring wheat) Breeder Group 2 –KWS PodiumKWS Group 3 – CocoonMasstock KWS TargetKWS TuxedoRAGT Group 4 – Gravitas (Soft)Limagrain Denman (Soft)Syngenta KWS Santiago (Hard)KWS Stigg (Hard)Limagrain

Podium - end user views nabim “Over three years of testing this variety has performed better than Einstein and meets the intake criteria. However flour extraction rates may sometimes be lower than expected” Export ukp – bread wheat

Podium - verdict A useful set of all-round characteristics and OWBM resistance is very useful but we need to know what the millers really think of it – is it as good as Cordiale? - Wait and see

Cocoon, Target and Tuxedo InvictaCocoonTargetTuxedoScout Yield (T) Lodging75878 Mildew67666 Y Rust88899 B rust88679 S. trit66676 Eyespot57768 OWBM--R-R Protein HFN Sp Wt nd wheat

Cocoon- end user views nabim “In three years of trials it has shown variability across the years for both grain hardness and rheological analysis and is unlikely to be a preferred Group 3 variety for all millers” Export uks – soft wheat Distillers Rated ‘poor’

Target - end user views nabim “Over the three years of testing it appears to produce consistent results and is similar in biscuit performance to Robigus” Export uks – soft wheat Distillers Rated ‘poor’

Tuxedo - end user views nabim “Over three years of testing there was evidence of variability between the years for dough extensibility. It is unlikely to be a preferred Group 3 variety for all millers” Export uks – soft wheat Distillers Rated ‘medium’

Cocoon, Target and Tuxedo - verdict Cocoon – useful yield and disease resistance but too weak and little interest from end-users. - No Target – stiff straw, good disease resistance plus OWBM resistance. Acceptable for biscuit but not for distilling. - Probably Tuxedo - good disease resistance but lacks OWBM resistance and has poor specific weight. Unlikely to be universally sought for biscuits but perhaps for distilling. - Possibly but check the market

Santiago, Gravitas, Denman and Stigg - verdicts Santiago – very high yield with weakish straw, poor disease and poor grain quality (= high input/high output) - Yes Gravitas – reasonable yield, good disease resistance but too weak - No Denman - reasonable yield but too weak. Good for distilling - Probably not Stigg – excellent disease resistance but yield too low and poor specific weight - No
