3 The Food Pyramid  Shows you what you should eat  How much you should eat?  What type of food?  Benefits of Balanced Diet  Each food is different!

5 Grains Made from barley, cornmeal, oats, rice, wheat, or cereal grain. 2 different types  Whole Grains (Whole Wheat Bread)  Refined Grains (White Bread) WHOLE GRAINS ARE HEALTHIER Eating whole grains can be helpful with weight management

7 Fruits and Vegetables No single fruit or vegetable provides all of the nutrients you need to be healthy Variety is key to a healthy diet Lowers blood pressure Reduce risk of heart disease The different amount of colors = the better!

9 Meat Major source of protein, iron, zinc and Vitamin B Protein is essential for muscle growth Many different types include: Beef, chicken, pork, fish Vegetarians must get vitamins in meat from other sources

11 Dairy 3 different types include: Milk, Yogurt, Cheese Source for calcium, protein, phosphorus, vitamin A, and vitamin D Produced from milk of mammals BE CAREFUL!! high in saturated fat and cholesterol Skimmed products are a slightly healthier choice

13 Others (Oils and Fats) Eating to much can be bad for diet Not eating it can cause lack of energy “Empty Calories” = Have little vitamins and minerals Examples - salad dressings, mayonnaise, butter, and margarine Some are essential that we need for our body

15 Recommended Serving Size Per Day Grains = 6-11 Fruits and Vegetables = 3-5 (of each) Meat = 2-3 Dairy = 2-3 Others (Oils and Fats) = Use sparingly

16 Examples Of One Serving Size Grains -1 slice bread, 1 oz dry cereal Fruits and Vegetables - 1 medium fruit (about the size of a baseball), 1 cup raw leafy vegetables Meat - 3 oz cooked meat or grilled fish Dairy - 1 cup fat-free, low-fat milk or low-fat yogurt Others (Fats and Oils) - 1 tsp soft margarine, 1 Tbsp mayonnaise,1 tsp vegetable oil
